Are you an enthusiastic and reliable Clinical Respiratory Physiologist who would like to work with children?  Are you able to perform as part of a team as well as independently?

Based within the Heart & Lung division at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the sleep service provides a range of assessments, ranging from oximetry to full polysomnography, CPAP and Bilevel ventilatory support performed each evening in our dedicated five-bedded Sleep Unit and on the Respiratory ward.  The service performs approximately 2000 sleep studies per annum and maintains a support service for approximately 330 children at home on long-term non-invasive ventilatory support.

We are a busy, friendly Sleep Unit team consisting of Clinical Physiologists, Respiratory Consultants, Clinical Sleep Fellows, Clinical Nurse Specialists and administrative support. We are seeking a Clinical Respiratory Physiologist to join our team. You must have good interpersonal skills, be computer literate, enjoy working with children, and be sensitive to the needs of our patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be expected to work on a rolling monthly rota over 7 nights per week.  The shift pattern is flexible but will typically consist of a mixture of 11.5 hour night shifts and 7.5 hour day shifts. The Sleep Unit is operational 7 days and night per week and the shift pattern may include up to two weekends per rota.
  • You should have experience as a Clinical Physiologist (or Trainees) and will have completed the BSc Clinical Physiology or have a relevant science degree, or equivalent experience. RCCP, AHCS or equivalent registration is desirable
  • Experience in respiratory sleep studies, and in the assessment and treatment of sleep apnoea are essential, preferably in paediatrics however comprehensive in-house training will be available to the successful applicant
  • Work as part of a team to provide an effective sleep physiology service overnight for patients aged 0-18 years
  • Assist with recovery of sleep monitoring equipment from other wards and from the sleep unit, transporting the used equipment to the designated cleaning area
  • Assist with the decontamination and cleaning of reusable sensors ready for subsequent sleep studies and the safe disposal of contaminated single patient use equipment
  • Answer telephone calls, deal with simple enquiries or pass on to another member of the sleep or lung function team as appropriate
  • Assist with daily operation of the sleep unit
  • Meet annually with Lead or Senior Clinical Physiologist to discuss professional goals and performance
