Job overview

The neurovascular post will provide cover for the in- and out-patient neurovascular service and cover the rapid assessment neurology unit 2 days a week.  Post holders will share clinical responsibilities with the other clinical fellows and the 8 trainees. They will also be expected to help with development of ward protocols and undertake audit projects and clinical service guidelines.  Clinical research activities will also be encouraged.  There will be an on-call commitment for all posts to neurology and neurosurgery, inclusive of long-day shifts and weekends.

This is a post suitable for a doctor who is post MRCPCH and wishes to pursue a career in paediatric neurology. The post will offer excellent experience of the assessment of acutely neurological disorders in children and subspeciality training in paediatric neurovascular disorders (including clinical assessment, interpretation of specialist radiological investigations and medical, surgical and endovascular management approaches). The post is a full time appointment, but applications from doctors wishing to work on a part-time basis will also be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

The neurovascular team provides a service for the diagnosis, investigation and management of the full range of neurovascular disorders in children. The service is one of two nationally designated centres specifically for the treatment of vein of Galen malformation in children and additionally see large numbers of children with arterial ischaemic stroke, moya moya and vascular malformations. There is a weekly interventional Neuroradiology list as well as a weekly diagnostic cerebral angiography list.

The postholder will be expected to take an active role in the inpatient and outpatient management of children under the care of the neurovascular team. Specific duties will include a weekly neurovascular outpatient clinic (cerebrovascular disease/neurovascular malformations/revascularisation x1/week) and co-ordination, preparation, presentation and documentation of discussion at the weekly multidisciplinary neurovascular radiology meeting. The postholder will be expected to liaise with the acute ward team about the planned management of patients on the weekly interventional Neuroradiology list on the day of admission, liaise between the interventional radiology suite and ward on the day of acute interventions and coordinate plans for follow-up prior to discharge. In addition, the postholder will be expected to coordinate discussion of patients by the team at the request of other colleagues in the department.
