Job overview

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a doctor to work within the Integrated Sexual Health service for 12 months commencing in August 2025.

The post is for 9 Programmed Activities a week or 36 hours a week.

This post is suitable for a doctor who has completed their Foundation Training and has an interest in Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare. No prior experience is required and full training will be provided.

Qualified GP’s are also encouraged to apply and will be employed as a Specialty doctor.

Doctors already in a Speciality Training programme are also encouraged to apply and to take a 12 month Out of Programme Experience (OOPE)

The service is based at:

Swindon Health Centre. 1 Islington Street, Swindon, SN1 2DQ Based in the centre of Swindon town hence ideally placed for walk-in and booked GUM & contraception clinics 6 days a week. Chippenham Community Hospital, this service runs once a week on a Wednesday evening and is for GUM appointments only.

Main duties of the job

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

Clinical Duties:

1. To take careful and relevant histories and to examine male and female patients including genital examinations, perform routine microscopy (training provided if required), request  investigations and interpret results, and prescribe treatments for STIs according to the clinic protocols and in accordance with National BASHH guidelines.

2. Take detailed medical histories from patients and advise about all available methods of contraception including LARC’s in accordance with National FSRH guidelines.

3. Safeguard vulnerable patients including young people aged under 18 and vulnerable adults. Level 3 safeguarding training should be achieved and maintained during the post.

4. If the post holder is able to fit LARC’s then they would be expected to do this within the  integrated contraception clinics. If the post holder is not a LARC fitter then training can be provided if they desire to do so.

5. Provide relevant sexual health promotion to men and women.

6. Refer patients to health advisers and other healthcare partners where appropriate.

7. Keep detailed electronic notes of consultations on the ‘Lilie’ IT system.

8. Liaise with nurses, health advisers and laboratory staff as required for the optimal management of all patients.
