Job overview

These posts are ideally suited to people looking to develop and obtain an ST3 post as many previous fellows have been successful

Royal Cornwall Hospital is based across three sites, with the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro being the main DGH, with two further hospitals, St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital, in Penzance.  The trauma service is delivered at Royal Cornwall Hospital and orthopaedic elective surgery is undertaken at St Michael’s Hospital. In addition to working on your own projects,  research posts support an array of NIHR-approved RCTs and so develop a thorough and CV-enhancing understanding of research within a nationwide context.

Trauma and Orthopaedics undertake approximately 5,500 elective operations per year, treat circa 2,700 trauma patients, and see approximately 13,700 new out-patients and 32,000 follow-up patients.

Main duties of the job

General Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

  • Provision with colleagues of service to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
  • Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorized absences.
  • Any responsibility that relates to a special interest.
  • Involvement in research if applicable.
  • The post-holder must at all times carry out his/her duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy. A responsibility to ensure that all colleagues and patients receive the same treatment, care, and attention, regardless of race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, marital status, age, sexuality, or disability.
  • A responsibility to work co-operatively with colleagues and to respect and value their contribution to patient/client care.

The unit has a good reputation for supporting its non-training grade doctors and many of our previous trust doctors and clinical fellows have gone on to successfully apply for specialty training posts.  There is regular departmental teaching and the unit has strong links with the research department and is involved with a number of national multicentre studies with opportunities for junior doctor involvement.
