Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in General Ophthalmology, cataract and Urgent care.  The post will be suitable for an experiences clinical fellow looking to expand their skills with an exciting and varied timetable both in Outpatient and surgical sessions.

The role will give the successful applicant the opportunity to gain experience in a world renowned teaching hospital.

Main duties of the job

Main duties

The post holder will be expected to gain experience in general and emergency ophthalmology covering comprehensive training topics in conditions ranging from oculoplastics, cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, medical retina, cataract, uveitis and paediatrics.  At the end of the fellowship the post-holder will be able to independently diagnose and manage the majority of emergency eye conditions.

- Diagnosis and management of in/outpatients - Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week. - Supervision of junior medical staff and participation in informal and formal teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

May vary but will include:

  • 7 clinical sessions, 1 theatre session and 2 admin/audit/management sessions. The clinical sessions will include rapid access clinics (urgent care/emergency ophthalmology), cataract clinics and general ophthalmology clinics
  • All clinical sessions will take place at Moorfields at Croydon and there will be a chance to attend the City Road teaching sessions when appropriate and use the facilities at the City Road site including the Institute of Ophthalmology library
  • This post includes a surgical session to allow a cataract surgeon to develop their skills alongside a consultant ophthalmic surgeon
  • The successful candidate will join the on call doctor system based at Moorfields at St Georges Hospital. This would be approximately a 1:9 rota providing out of hours emergency ophthalmology cover. This activity attracts a ~20% uplift in salary due to the out of hours nature of the work

The post holder will be expected to gain experience in general and emergency ophthalmology covering comprehensive training topics in conditions ranging from oculoplastics, cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, medical retina, cataract, uveitis and paediatrics.  At the end of the fellowship the post-holder will be able to independently diagnose and manage the majority of emergency eye conditions.

The post-holder will also be expected to

  • Diagnose and manage patients under the care of the Consultant
  • Manage urgent cases presenting at any time during the week
  • Supervise junior medical staff (speciality trainees) where appropriate and participate in informal and formal teaching for allied health professionals
