Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow Higher (ST6+) in Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) and Paediatric Retrieval (PaNDR) at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to commence from 06 May 2026 for 12 months in the first instance.
This post is attractive to oversees Trainees as well as Senior Trainees including post CCT holders who are wishing to gain experience in Paediatric Critical Care and Paediatric Retrieval. It would be particularly suited to those wishing to gain experience at higher grade level in a centre of excellence before seeking their first Consultant post.
Fellows and Trainees with at least two years of experience in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care Medicine, or trained in Emergency Medicine are also encouraged to apply.
The Fellow will work across PICU and PaNDR in 3-6 month blocks. This will allow you gain experience in Paediatric Intensive and High Dependency Care, including conventional and high frequency oscillatory ventilation, transitional care and paediatric retrievals. You will be expected to attend theatre lists to achieve an agreed number of orotracheal or nasotracheal intubations.
You will be encouraged to follow the PICS-ATG Transport Passport curriculum as per the RCPCH PICM Retrieval competencies and keep a transport logbook. There will be bespoke induction on both sides as an introduction to the service and you will be allocated a clinical supervisor on either side. There will also be frequent assessment and feedback provided.
In order to be considered, applicants must meet the essential criteria outlined in the person specification.
Please note that this post does not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval or training recognition but can be used as an Out-Of-Program for Experience (OOPE).
Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at point of commencement is required.
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU/HDU) is a tertiary level 13-bedded PICU. It is the only PICU in the East of England region and it is a PICM Grid Training Unit, well known as a centre of excellence, a stronghold in research, trials and neuroscience. Trainees from other specialties who want to boost their paediatric critical care experience rotate to this unit with great feedback and many learning opportunities.
PaNDR is a newly established service that serves the region of East of England (EoE). This Service is co-located with the existing Neonatal Service based at Addenbrookes Hospital and serves 15 large non-paediatric specialist district general hospitals in addition to Addenbrookes Hospital. The service is fully equipped with 4 high fidelity Ambulances and fully staffed with qualified Ambulance Technicians.
The post holder will participate on the Middle Grade rota which is a full shift pattern and regulated by the European working time directive (EWTD).
Support for study and professional leaves are built in the job plan and participation in research and audit activities is strongly encouraged, although the training opportunities associated with this post will be equal to those for the Specialty Registrars in the department.
