An opportunity has arisen for Clinical Fellow in Thoracic Surgery to join our team for a period of 12 months.

One of the largest cardiothoracic programmes in the UK, our team undertake a wide range of procedures including over 1200 thoracic procedures and approximately 1200 open heart procedures each year. In addition, we are one of the largest robotic thoracic centres in the UK. The unit undertakes heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support (Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure Service), and adult congenital cardiac surgery (Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service).

The Robotic Clinical Fellow role is designed for a doctor who has completed at least basic surgical training (foundation or equivalent, and ~2 years of surgical training), plus at least 2 years of Cardiothoracic experience with a career ambition in Thoracic surgery. Depending on previous experience and aptitude it may suit doctors aiming for:

  • Achieving a national training number (NTNs) in cardiothoracic surgery – it should be noted that UK NTNs are highly competitive
  • Submitting an application for article 14 (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration - CESR)
  • A substantive role as a specialist doctor in cardiothoracic surgery
  • Gaining additional clinical experience with an interest in robotic surgery before returning to another country
  • Would like to engage in research activities

The successful candidates will be fully supported by a thriving and friendly cardiothoracic team. You will share responsibility for the pre-operative assessment, preparation, surgical care and post-operative care of all cardiac and thoracic surgery patients. This includes attendance at outpatient clinics & MDT meetings, ward rounds and elective and emergency operating sessions. The post holder will contribute to the full shift out of hours cardiothoracic on call rota.
