Job overview

The Clinical Educator Midwife will support the Practice Development Midwives in the planning and organisation of specific educational programmes in response to the Maternity Services training needs analysis (TNA), this will encompass local and national recommendations.

The role also has a particular focus on quality and safety providing expert clinical support and advice that will enhance care whilst acting as a champion of best practice to support the midwifery, support worker and medical team. This ensure that all members of the multi-disciplinary team both understand and adhere to maternity specific and Trust guidelines. The post holder will assist in the on-going development of a positive midwifery culture by raising awareness of the role of the midwife.

The post holder will be part of the Professional Development Midwives team and will have excellent clinical, educational and leadership skills to be able to promote high standards of evidence based care. The post holder also must have the ability and confidence to support and challenge in a non-judgemental way.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as an educational resource to all staff ensuring open communication to enable individual staff and team progression/development
  • To provide clinical and educational support to all staff working in the clinical area
  • To initiate promote and support the delivery of high quality evidence based practice in the clinical area
  • To be a clinical role model demonstrating expert clinical practice and credibility whilst providing support and advice for less experienced midwives and members of the MDT
  • Ensure there is an effective learning environment to allow staff to meet their objectives in a climate of support and understanding
  • To ensure that all staff providing care acquire the appropriate skills and knowledge to deliver competent and timely standards of care
  • Facilitate the development and updating of maternity guidelines in line with national recommendations; e.g. NICE guidelines and Quality Standards liaising with other professionals throughout the organisation where necessary to achieve this
  • Monitor the implementation of guidelines adherence within maternity services
  • Help to implement skills drills training sessions for the multidisciplinary team in light of incidents and investigations within the maternity department ensuring lessons are learnt and staff competencies are assessed
  • Maintain an awareness of professional developments in midwifery and facilitate the maintenance of appropriate standards of care
