Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Claims, Inquests & Redress Officer to join our Quality and Safety Team. This is a unique opportunity to play a central role in how the Trust learns from incidents, claims, redress and inquests, supports staff and families, and meets its legal and regulatory duties.

In this varied and rewarding role, you will manage a portfolio of inquests, clinical negligence claims, inquests and redress cases under supervision, working closely with colleagues across the organisation and with external legal partners. You’ll help ensure that our responses are timely, compassionate and robust, and that learning is captured and acted upon.

We are seeking someone who is organised, resilient and compassionate and who is able to manage competing deadlines without compromising quality. You’ll bring excellent communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and empathy. Experience in legal work, inquests, claims or a related field is desirable, but we welcome applications from candidates with transferable skills and a passion for learning and improvement.

If you’re ready to make a meaningful impact, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

What you’ll be doing

  • Managing a diverse caseload from initial review to conclusion, including inquests, claims and redress, under supervision and guidance.
  • Coordinating the Trust’s involvement in inquests—evidence review, disclosure, medical record summaries, witness support and compliance with HM Coroner requirements.
  • Attending pre‑inquest meetings, hearings and external litigation meetings, representing the Trust with support from the Claims, Inquests and Redress Managers.
  • Providing timely advice to staff and liaising with NWSSP Legal and Risk Services, Welsh Risk Pool and external solicitors and internal teams.
  • Communicating complex, sensitive and sometimes contentious information with professionalism and compassion, including with bereaved families.
  • Supporting staff to prepare accurate, confident witness statements and guiding them through the inquest and litigation process.
  • Maintaining accurate case records and documentation in line with Trust policies.
  • Identifying risks, themes and learning opportunities, including potential Prevention of Future Deaths concerns.
  • Supporting the production of reports, undertaking data analysis and insights to support organisational learning and continuous improvement.
  • Contributing to policy development, training, audits and the Trust’s wider claims management arrangements.
  • Travelling to Trust sites, courts and external meetings as required.
