Job overview

We are looking for an experienced and driven Chief Respiratory Physiologist to lead our Lung Function service. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional to take on a key leadership role, overseeing the operational management of the department while delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

In this role, you will provide expert professional leadership, working closely with the Consultant Lead to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the service. You will be responsible for implementing and interpreting local and national policies, maintaining clinical standards, and driving service excellence.

As a line manager, you will support and develop junior team members through recruitment, induction, training, and performance management, creating a positive and high-performing team environment.

You will also play a central role in service development and strategic planning, contributing to the design and delivery of integrated care pathways across the local community. Your insight and expertise will help shape the future of the service.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform unsupervised, all routine techniques within the lung function laboratory. To include Spirometry, FeNO, lung volumes, TLco, plethysmography and reversibility testing.
  • Perform unsupervised, the following complex procedures: Histamine challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, respiratory muscle assessment, fitness to fly assessment, sleep studies, long term oxygen assessment and Capillary blood gasses.
  • Ensure data quality by undertaking equipment calibration and quality control for all tests performed within the laboratory
  • Ensure the technical quality of assessment complies with published national guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all aspects of legal and ethical obligations.
  • Act as an expert Physiologist within the specialist area, working with clients who may have complex social problems and who come from a culturally diverse background and independently manage potentially distressing, stressful or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.
  • Provision of CPAP (currently caseload is over 3000 patients) and support for those on Bi-level ventilation.
  • Provide technical and clinical advice on diagnostic measurements to Multi-disciplinary clinical teams, to enable further development of individual Care-plans and devise and provide expert training, advise and education to Allied Health professionals (AHP’s), GP’s, Consultants and voluntary agencies as and when required.
