The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key member of our Executive Team and a voting member of the Board of Directors.
As an Executive Director, the post holder shares responsibility with Executive team colleagues for the overall strategic direction and performance of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
As COO for the largest Cancer Centre in Europe, you will have both external and internal focus. You will be contributing to our strategic thinking and decision-making processes, whilst representing the Trust at national & regional system level meeting and agendas. internally, you will be ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient services across the whole organisation. Providing strong leadership to support implementation and delivery of the Christie’s operational performance plan and driving the deliverables within available resources

To thrive in this role, we anticipate that you will be drawing on extensive experience in demanding operational management roles and at managing busy and extensive portfolios of work. Ideally, your operational experience will have been substantially in healthcare.
Lead alongside the Executive Medical Director and the Chief Nurse the safe and effective delivery of patient services across the organisation.
Deliver the Christie’s operational performance targets.
Lead the integrated performance management systems for the trust.
Ensure the continued improvement and efficiency in the performance in operational services, with financial plans in place that support clinical services and their development.
Alongside the Executive Medical Director and Chief Nurse support the implementation of clinical service strategies and their delivery and manage multiple partnerships on behalf of the trust.
Lead the transformational change and value for improvement programme (VIP).
The Trust Accountable Emergency Officer (AEO) for EPRR.
Actively engage and maintain effective relationships at a system wide level, participating in relevant groups and committees as required
Principle Accountabilities
Provide executive leadership to the clinical divisions for service delivery
Board level accountability for the delivery for operational performance targets and achievement against local and national standards
Corporate responsibility as a member of the Trust Board for overall formulation of policy and strategic direction of the Trust
Board level accountability for the delivery and management of partnerships and partnership development plans
Core Requirements
To contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust and to ensure that agreed direction is joined up and well communicated and understood within the organisation.
To contribute to the development of corporate objectives and overall performance of the Trust
To contribute effectively as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive team.
To forge and develop high level progressive working relationships with external bodies including integrated care system, specialist commissioners, locality boards, Manchester Cancer, Manchester University, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, other cancer centres etc.
To provide strong cohesive leadership of the organisation
Work with divisional directors and senior managers to ensure that each of the division has clear lines of accountability and responsibility
Ensure that the divisions are constituted in such a way that ensures structures, processes and systems are in place to support high quality patient care
Planning/Performance Review/Activity
Lead the development of divisional strategic plans and the creation of business plans to support service development in line with the Trust’s strategic objectives.
To take an overview of all divisional business plans to ensure that there is appropriate integration and a joined-up approach across the plans
To work with the Executive Director of Finance and Chief Nurse to ensure a robust system for reporting clinical data by which the Trust can measure its clinical performance.
Monitor the performance of the Divisions against agreed objectives using data effectively and where necessary take corrective action where performance is not in accordance with objectives.
To lead the delivery of national and local access targets for all clinical services.
