Job overview

This split post will form part of the clinical pharmacy team leading on delivering high quality, safe, effective care across both of our large hospital campuses. This split post will work with the Advanced Pharmacy Technician – Clinical Services and Governance to strategically support and develop the service our team of medicines management technicians and assistants needs to deliver at NUH.

In this role, you will work closely with the Pharmacy Clinical Services Management Team, Pharmacy Governance and wider Medicines Safety and Governance teams to improve the standards of medicines management in clinical areas across the Trust. You will be supported by the wider clinical pharmacy team.

You will be part of the Medicine Management Leadership Team at NUH. This role provides the opportunity to also work with the MMT Education and Training.

You will also act as a leader and a line manager within the team and will be given the opportunity to develop your skills as this new and exciting role is embedded.

Main duties of the job

This role is a 75: 25  percent split. For 75% of the role, you will deliver patient-facing clinical pharmacy care on a regular basis and will use your medicines management skills to improve patient care.  The 25% will be for Quality and safety on the wards working alongside Governance.

You will act as a role model for other pharmacy technicians and will use your skills and knowledge to work with colleagues to develop standards, and expectations and demonstrate improvements in the care we provide.

You will use your leadership and management skills on a regular basis. You will lead improvements and changes in the team and will line-manage individual medicines management technicians and help them to develop and thrive.

To participate in departmental weekends, bank holidays and late duty working as required. At the time of advertising, the weekend rota encompasses 2 half-day shifts every 4/5 weeks at the city campus or 1 full day shift every 4 weeks at the QMC campus. In addition, the post holder will participate in a system of flexible shifts to facilitate NUH pharmacy opening times.

  • To assist in leading the Medicine Management Technicians in service improvement and strategic development of the clinical and operational technical pharmacy services within pharmacy clinical services on the wards
  • To assist in ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient, high quality, innovative and cost-effective technical ward service by ensuring services are delivered to acceptable local and national standards, meeting current and future legal requirements and professional guidelines and ethical codes of practice.
  • To assist in the planning and delivery of a safe and effective technical ward service on wards across both campuses, in conjunction with the clinical pharmacists.
  • To work in conjunction with other lead medicines management technicians to develop and deliver the ward technician training programme, ensuring quality monitoring standards are developed, agreed and implemented.
  • To assist in ensuring quality monitoring systems are developed, implemented and agreed, and that targets and standards are set.
  • To line manage the Medicines Management Technicians within the Medicine team.
