Job overview

We are seeking an experienced midwife to lead the Birth Refelections/Debrief service within maternity services at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust.

An exciting opportunity has arisen where you will be able to use your extensive midwifery knowledge and skills to promote excellence in maternity care giving women and their families the opportunity to discuss their birth experience and gain a greater understanding of events or interventions that may have occured.

The post holder will work closely with the Senior Team in maternity services and work collaboratively within the Multidisciplinary Team to develop a maternity service that is responsive to the needs of women and staff.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will lead on the debrief clinic providing  support to women who require this.

They will use their clinical knowledge, skills in trauma infomed care, active listening, solution focussed questioning and birth trauma training  to try and find resolution, reflection and an increased understanding all aspects of their maternity journey.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Undertake the debrief clinic.  Conduct individual and personalised appointments with women and families, providing a safe space to discuss their experiences and emotions.
  • Signpost families and make referrals for further support with their physical recovery and mental wellbeing.
  • Be visible in inpatient clinical areas to be able to speak with women and families about the experience within maternity diffusing any concerns or issues at ward level or to facilitate medical debriefs where required.
  • Maintain and promote an environment conducive to learning.  Link with networks beyond the clinical area, sharing good practice and information.
  • Formulate and deliver training to all staff groups within the MDT on topics relevant to their job role.
  • Provide feedback within midwifery services, working closely with the CMM’s, Matrons, Deputy DOM, Director of Midwifery to further develop midwifery care.
  • Implement change agreed with the Director of Midwifery in order to improve and maintain a high-quality service in line with the national agenda.
  • Bring to the immediate attention of the CMM’s, Matrons, Deputy DOM and Director of Midwifery any issues, which are impeding the provision of an efficient or high-quality service, adhering to the escalation policy and the Trust’s Incident reporting as relevant.
  • Participate in Audit and Research leading to the development of research-based practices, development of Trust midwifery policies and ensure its effective implementation maintaining standards in accordance with the UK Law, Nursing and Midwifery Council, Trust and EU guidelines.
  • Capture data and report into the governance structure any findings and themes of the debrief conversations to support the clinical areas.
  • Support the midwifery management team in responding to complaints and PALS as directed by the DOM and Maternity Matrons.
  • Be able to plan, organise and chair meetings where required involving other professionals or agencies.
  • Plan, support and organise comprehensive and personalised care plans to meet the needs of the woman.
  • Engagement with the Local Maternity and Neonatal System and participate in relevant forums as well as other relevant, regional and national workstreams to keep up to date with the developments in that field.  This will enhance sharing of lessons learned and best practices.
  • Be prepared to work as a clinical midwife and be redeployed to any area of the maternity service at times of heightened activity and escalation.  Be able to adapt and change plans with planned activities as required in view of this.
  • Directly receive information on a regular basis which may cause emotional distress to all parties and disseminate contentious, complex and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Link and liaise with the Safeguarding Team on safeguarding issues to recognise and respond appropriately and effectively to concerns relating to women, children and the unborn baby.
  • Ensure the provision of excellent infection control practices as defined by national recommendations and local policies and maintenance of high standards of cleanliness throughout. Provide a clean environment for care, ensuring best practice in infection control and improving clinical care standards.
  • Complete Rapid Assurance Checklists, Root Cause Analysis and take appropriate action.
  • Link with the Trust Band 7’s to address corporate issues within the Division as necessary.
