We are looking for well-motivated, HCPC registered individuals, with experience of working in an NHS pathology laboratory (or equivalent) to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department based at Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham, Kent.
In partnership with Beckman Coulter UK (BCUK) our pathology laboratory houses a range of equipment including: Beckman Coulter DxH 900 Analysers and Slidemaker/Stainer (SMS), IL(Werfen) TOP 550 coagulation analysers and Ortho Vision blood grouping analysers.
Participation in the out of hour’s service is expected, once trained and competency assessed.
This is a Band 5 role with progression to Band 6 upon successful completion of agreed objectives.

The post holder will process laboratory samples using automated analysers and manual methodology to produce timely, accurate and relevant results and reports, enabling a high quality and efficient diagnostic service.
They will work unsupervised in all sections of the department including Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Morphology, Specialist Coagulation and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) enabling the acquisition of specialist knowledge of all scientific, technical and clerical work of the department, referring to more senior staff for support when needed
The post holder will perform a range of Biomedical Scientist clinical activities and provide technical advice to service users, as required. They will prioritise work, accommodating urgent samples and Trust target activity e.g bed management.
Technical Responsibilities:
Perform tests and assays on all samples as necessary, according to established protocols and required standards.
Ensure that documentation e.g. patient records and manual testing worksheets are maintained to both local and Trust standards (including electronic records).
Undertake technical validation of laboratory investigations, ensuring accuracy and precision of all results
Prioritise samples for processing and results for issuing
Validate and release clinical results onto iLab system, where results are then available to service users
Ensure that abnormal results are reported to the appropriate person.
Service and maintain all specialist equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions and good laboratory practice.
Carry out basic analyser trouble shooting
Ensure procedures for maintaining equipment are followed
Maintain adequate stocks and ensure efficient use of reagents and consumables.
