A vacancy has arisen for a  Biomedical Scientist  within the Blood Sciences pathology department at Scarborough Hospital.

The successful candidate will be part of a team providing an efficient, high quality diagnostic service through participation in the specialist technical and scientific operations within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department  Department.

The department is fully equipped with the Sysmex XN  haematology analysers, Sysmex CN coagulation analysers and Grifols Eflexis analysers and Gel Column technology in Blood Transfusion.

Please note it will be a contractual requirement to participate in the 24/7 shift system upon successful competency assessment in the department.

As an IBMS approved training laboratory, we encourage and support all Band 5 staff to obtain the IBMS Specialist Diploma. For Band 6 staff, we encourage and support staff in achieving the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma to enable career progression.

The laboratory is UKAS accredited and has MHRA compliance.

Main duties of the job

Under supervision:

  • To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
  • To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
  • Technical validation of patient results.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
  • To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process
