There is an exciting opportunity for a Biomedical Scientists to join our team in the Blood Sciences – Haematology Laboratories primarily based at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.  This post will include rotation into the Blood Transfusion, and Coagulation departments.

The department operates a 24/7 working pattern and the successful candidate will be required to participate in this rota.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

The Pathology Partnership will provide the best possible service for patients and clinicians; improving health outcomes, delivering quality and efficiency benefits and ensuring a sustainable workforce for the longer term.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Haematology, and hold current registration with the HCPC (Band 5/Band 6 BMS). If applying for a Band 6 role, candidates will have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Haematology or be ready for assessment.

Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.

Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results are produced for patients.

To be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision.

Assist in monitoring quality standards, perform audit as directed in line with service needs.

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 4 (no portfolio), Band 5 (registered BMS) unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6 (specialist BMS). Please note, holding an MSc does not replace the need for a specialist portfolio for band 6 progression.
