Main duties of the job

The post holder will practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist working effectively as part of a team providing histopathology, cytopathology and autopsy clinical technical services to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and general practitioners. The laboratory is located at North Tyneside General Hospital. They will perform a range of scientific investigations and procedures to primarily assist in the differential diagnosis of cancer and other tissue related disease. They will provide technical support to pathologists, clinicians and other staff to provide an efficient diagnostic service. They will participate in the supervision, training and development of trainee biomedical scientists and medical laboratory assistants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Typical duties include:

Specimen Receipt and booking-in.

Triage of specimens in the Reception and Dissection areas.

Assisting the dissection process.

Routine Histopathology lab duties to include embedding, microtomy, staining, and QC functions.

Running the Immunocytochemistry and Cytology laboratories on a day to day basis.
