Band 6 Specialist Diabetes Midwife

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife to work within the Diabetes Specialist Team who provide midwifery support and care to all women during pregnancy with established diabetes or newly diagnosed gestational diabetes.  The Diabetes Specialist Team is a small and friendly team who mainly work at the Royal Berkshire Hospital based in Reading. Working hours will be 37.5 hours across Monday to Fridays. They will be also be expected to carry out midwifery on calls for the hospital services (approximately 6 a year).

They will work closely with the Band 7 midwives who lead the team, Endocrine Consultants, Obstetric Consultants, Dieticians  to ensure all women receive evidence based care during a higher risk pregnancy.

Main duties of the job

• Develop and implement programmes of evidenced based care planning for patient group and their families including reproductive health care.
• Develop personalised care plans for each woman.
• Ensure women and their families receive information in a sensitive way to enable them to make an informed decision.
• Responsible for the day-to-day management of software reporting of women’s home testing to provide support, care planning and escalation to obstetric/endocrine teams as required.  Be able to adjust diet as required for GDM women and if medication needs adjusting.
• To review test results and diagnose GDM and Type 2 diabetes using trust guidance . Be able to inform women of GDM and provide ongoing support.
• Provide midwifery support at the Joint Diabetes Clinic as needed.
• Support the Band 7 Specialist Midwife to ensure that high standards of quality of care are delivered & maintained.
