Acute Medicine services are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 - Clinical Sister role within the Acute Medical Unit.
This is a 53 bedded assessment unit which provides safe, compassionate and comprehensive care for acute patients using an integrated team approach.
We have a comprehensive developmental plan for all of our staff which are able to rotate to develop themselves further with enhanced knowledge and skills.
Acute Medicine is ever expanding rapidly with new initiatives to ensure we deliver excellent patient care, and experience to all of our patients.

Main duties of the job
- The post holder is responsible for clinical leadership through effective monitoring and implementation of standards and evidenced based practice; ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality care. Co-ordinating the unit liaising with the capacity team for patient flow.
- To provide direct management and facilitate learning and development within the nursing team.
- Management of preceptor ship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
- To take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of the nursing team.
- To undertake and document a comprehensive, systematic, and accurate nursing assessment of the patient as appropriate.
- To promote and deliver a high standard of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide an excellent patient experience.
- To create and utilise opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
- To work and undertake clinical shifts.
- To work within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one’s own abilities and limitations.
- To facilitate and build team working between nurses and the multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
- To participate in clinical audits within the clinical areas to monitor and improve standards of care.
- To ensure effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives, and colleagues.
- To participate in all elements of direct patient care including hydration, nutrition, continence, pressure area care and harm prevention.
- To ensure all trust documentation pertaining to patient care and departmental safety are completed to a high standard.
- To implement treatment, investigations, diagnostics, and referrals as per agreed patient plans.
- To practice in line with NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies, recognising own abilities and limitations.
- To offer telephone advice to patients and their carers, GP’s, and allied health professionals.
- To promote good working relationships within the nursing teams, providing appropriate advice and support.
- To teach, mentor and supervise students and other junior staff, ensuring a high level of competence.
- To respond to deteriorating patients in a timely manner and taking responsibility for supporting junior staff in such situations.
- To undertake immediate life support as part of trust training.
Managerial
- To assist the Ward Manager/Matron to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff.
- To support the Ward Manager/Matron to initiate and implement improvements using a systematic approach.
- To ensure staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery, maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.
- Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams.
- To ensure information on the Ward/Department/Clinical area information system is correct and updated regularly as appropriate.
- To deputise for the Ward Manager in leading the Acute Medical Unit in their absence.
- To assist the Ward Manager/Matron in monitoring and audit of standards including high impact interventions, KPI and target data.
- To co-ordinate each shift daily, acting as the Shift Leader.
