The post holder will be able to deliver elements of delegated dietetic care and undertake clinic work under the direction of a dietitian. The role will support and assist the inpatient dietitian in the management of nutritional therapy of working age and older adult patients. The post holder will be involved in supporting nutritional training programs and engagement projects such as malnutrition screening tool education, health promotion events as well as supporting audit projects and the team administration.
Main duties of the job
- To work independently, using protocols and guidance to support qualified dietitians and ensure the effective implementation of dietetic treatment for patients.
- To show willingness to adopt a flexible approach at work.
- To work autonomously on specific projects agreed with the registered dietitian.
- To deliver clinics within a care framework, under the supervision of a dietitian.
- To check food intake charts and undertake nutritional reviews on the wards
- To monitor patients on nutritional supplements in nursing and residential homes, home visits and telephone reviews.
- To be involved in partnership working with the ward multidisciplinary team, other allied health professionals and community partners.
- Maintain effective communication between multidisciplinary teams.
- To keep electronic records of all patient contacts on Rio information system in accordance with trust and departmental standards for record keeping.
- Develop, organise and maintain effective office systems including departmental resources and database.
- Participate in dietetic service meetings, departmental meetings, MDT meetings, care plan meetings.
- Participate in the collection, collation, analysis, evaluation and administration for data for audit purposes, present results and produce reports.
- To be computer literate and use dietary analysis programs, word processing and database management software packages.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To take responsibility for the monitoring and recommending changes to individual nutritional therapy using the process of care framework;
- To manage and prioritise a caseload of patients in a variety of settings as delegated by the dietitian and to regularly feedback regarding patients progress;
- With training, carry out accurate nutritional assessments including taking diet histories, assessing food record charts and analysing dietary intake.
- With training, provide basic dietary advice within a designated care framework.
- To measure and weigh patients using anthropometric equipment.
- To review patients on a caseload with support from a dietitian including over the telephone.
- Under dietetic supervision, to liaise with GP’s regarding nutritional prescriptions.
- Develop, organise and deliver presentations/ training and education to patients, carers, healthcare professionals and students.
- To deliver group education sessions such as MUST training to healthcare staff across the borough in a vatiey of settings.
- Develop and design and produce resource such as client info, training programmes, displays, hand-outs and evaluation tools.
- To participate in regular supervision and reflective practice.
