The role is to ensure seamless and effective delivery of patient care by working closely with the Registered Nurse.
The Post holder is a member of the nursing team appointed to support Registered Nurses in the delivery of direct care for patients receiving treatment and diagnosis for heart and lung conditions.
The role involves contact on a physical and psychological level with patients and their families. The post holder will undertake a range of activities under the supervision of a registered nurse, having been assessed and deemed competent in the activities required.

Main duties of the job
Assisting the Registered Nurse to deliver personal care to patients.
Assess and deliver under the supervision/guidance of the Registered Nurse, patient care requirements.
Assist patients with eating and drinking.
Taking and recording of observations e.g. blood pressure, temperature and heart rate.
ECG recording
Restocking the patient environment and the ward stock areas.
Ensuring the ward is safe and clean at all times.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, providing nursing support, care and treatment and carrying out nursing procedures within the sphere of required competencies.
- Provide support and assistance to professional colleagues when they are performing specific therapies, clinical treatments and investigative programmes for patients.
- Perform and report clinical observation of a patient including respiration rate, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, blood glucose monitoring, obtain urine specimen and perform routine urine analysis, reporting any concerns in the patient’s condition to the nurse in charge.
- Subject to appropriate training, become familiar with carrying out phlebotomy, cannulation, blood specimen handling, performing ECG’s, simple dressings and other technical nursing tasks as deemed appropriate.
- Ensure medical equipment and clinical supplies are replenished to the stock levels as determined by the ward manager.
- Assist with the maintenance of the department’s cleanliness, demonstrate awareness in infection prevention and control procedures. Maintain a safe care environment by minimising risk and report defects in equipment immediately to the nurse in charge.
- Ensure the safeguarding of medical records whilst they are in the department and to accurately file referral and supporting documentation as appropriate.
- Identify and report, clinical risks any accidents/incidents, near misses involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.
- Work within flexible rosters, designed to achieve the most effective use of staff to meet the needs of our patients.
