Job overview

Are you looking for a new challenge? The North London NHS Foundation Trust are seeking to appoint suitable individuals to the role of Associate Hospital Managers (AHMs). As an Associate Hospital Manager you will be working independently of our Trust & clinical teams  who assess & treat people detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. We would like to ensure that the AHMs reflect the diverse community we serve. We are particularly keen to seek applications from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds & applications encouraged from young people as these are currently under represented. We will however accept applications from all sections of the community & will appoint on merit. Applications are also strongly encouraged from people who are, or have been service users &/or carers. Due to the nature of the role we seek people who are/have been involved with mental health services outside of The North London NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

AHM reviews take the form of a hearing at which the patient’s doctor, care coordinator & nurse present written and oral evidence to a panel of three Associate Hospital Managers in an attempt to make the case that the patient should remain detained in hospital, usually the patient and their solicitor will then make the case for discharge. It is for the panel to decide on the basis of the evidence presented, whether the patient still meets the criteria for detention under the Mental Health Act. If all three panel members decide that the patient no longer meets the criteria, the panel should order the patient’s release.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Associate Hospital Managers will have access to confidential information and must maintain confidentiality with regard to information regarding patients or employees at all times.

Although not employees of the Trust, Associate Hospital Managers are expected to conduct themselves at all times in accordance with the Trust values and relevant Trust policies e.g. dress code, safeguarding, equal opportunities. Associate Hospital Managers must treat everyone with dignity and respect at all times.

Associate Hospital Managers are expected to make themselves available for hearings as agreed and for quarterly meetings (which incorporate training sessions). Review hearings and meetings usually last between one and four hours. Although AHMs work on a voluntary basis an honorarium is payable for attendance dependant on the hearing format & a flat rate of £70 for meetings.
