Job overview

To work as an Alcohol Liaison Nurse Specialist and support Alcohol Liaison Senior Specialist Nurse (ALSN) in line with the nursing framework and in accordance with the nursing philosophy of Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Trust.  To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. To promote and help to manage delivery of a quality nursing service, setting and monitoring clinical standards.

We are looking for Band 6 Alcohol Liaison Nurse Specialist to help drive through improvement, service redesign and manage patients care. We are a dynamic, friendly and supportive team rising to the challenges and hard work required in achieving our Clinical Quality Indictors. We are looking for RGN level 1 nurses ideally with a minimum of 18 months post registration experience at Senior Band 5 or equivalent. Experience in the use of extended roles would be an advantage. Working with the multi-disciplinary team, you will need to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to motivate and manage, adapting, driving and leading rapidly changing situations.

Main duties of the job

  • MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:

Clinical

Follow-up patients with a positive AUDIT score and conduct further assessments arranging brief interventions as required.

Support the ALSN to develop and maintain resilient pathways and liaison with local specialist alcohol services and local voluntary and statutory community support services.

Leadership

In conjunction with the Alcohol Liaison Senior Specialist Nurse (ALSN) will be responsible for effective organisation of the department.

Ensure the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with established procedure and the law.

Education

To act as a professional supervisor and utilise clinical supervision and reflective practice skills to enhance the development of self and colleagues in the inter-professional team in order to optimise patient care.

Management

Support the ALSN implementing new initiatives to run a cost-effective service monitoring the effectiveness of the service.

Ensure care is assessed and planned in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practise, policies and procedures.

Clinical Governance Responsibilities

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse participate in the planning and implementation of quality and risk management initiatives and targets, including CNST, RPST and Controls Assurance requirements.

  • MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:

Clinical

  • Follow-up patients with a positive AUDIT score and conduct further assessments arranging brief interventions as required. Onward referral of patients to local i-Access alcohol service. Support the ALSN to develop and maintain resilient pathways and liaison with local specialist alcohol services and local voluntary and statutory community support services. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in A&E, gastroenterology and antenatal departments. Provide expert clinical guidance regarding the management of alcohol withdrawal in in-patient settings. Act as an expert and specialist resource for other nursing and AHP teams around alcohol misuse and dependence. Ensure confidentiality at all times. Comply with Data Protection and Trust policies. Deliver patient care with patient’s consent and co-operation, being sensitive to their need for courtesy, dignity and privacy. Be accountable for own professional actions whilst working autonomously in the role. Maintain networking with colleagues outside the organisation to develop knowledge and keep up to date with alcohol dependent nursing issues.

In conjunction with the Alcohol Liaison Senior Specialist Nurse (ALSN) will be responsible for effective organisation of the department.

Ensure the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with established procedure and the law.

Ensure the safe use of equipment, ascertaining that staff understand how to operate the equipment are competent to do so and that the equipment is in safe working order.

Understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff according to the hospital’s Health and Safety Policy.

Report and records accidents/incidents and complaints to the Sister/Charge /Nurse Alcohol Liaison Senior Specialist Nurse (ALSN), according to the agreed policy and undertake further investigations as directed.

Be competent in current emergency resuscitation techniques, both in theory and practice.

Have a working knowledge of the fire regulations and procedures, ensuring appropriate action is taken in response to an emergency.

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse/ Alcohol Liaison Senior Specialist Nurse (ALSN), maintain budgetary control through an efficient and effective use of resources.

Attend meetings and participate in working parties when required, developing effective links with colleagues for obtaining and giving information.

Undertake projects and initiate improvements in nursing care and management of the Emergency Department.

Education

  • To act as a professional supervisor and utilise clinical supervision and reflective practice skills to enhance the development of self and colleagues in the inter-professional team in order to optimise patient care. To act as a mentor for students and other junior staff ensuring learning that is commensurate with education needs. To provide patients and their families with information, advice and education associated with current alcohol dependents management. Where appropriate ensuring a good level of understanding and encouraging patient participation in decision making and self-management. To ensure that time is spent on self-education using the appropriate alcohol dependents resources and written information that is available and identifying future learning opportunities and appropriate training programmes as they arise. To keep up to date with current developments in Alcohol dependents treatment and care and to participate fully in local nursing networks. To act as a specialist resource for training for wards, OPD and A&E.

Management

  • Support the ALSN implementing new initiatives to run a cost-effective service monitoring the effectiveness of the service. Ensure care is assessed and planned in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practise, policies and procedures. Maintain accurate secure and confidential patient records and prepare reports as required for performance monitoring purposes. Ongoing collection of data in order to evaluate the service and report the performance. Audit the use of the screening process and the service provided. Support the ALSN in developing and implementing protocols and procedures for the service including referral pathways. To contribute to monitoring developments in patients’ treatments and management. To organise and manage own caseload and practice in a timely manner. To maintain an overview of nursing complaints related to alcohol misuse. To contribute to investigations into specific incidents or complaints as requested by the Divisional Chief Nurse. To contribute to initiatives designed to recruit and retain staff. To manage specific projects in liaison with the ALSN and Clinical Nurse Leader as required by the Divisional Chief Nurse.

In conjunction with the Deputy Chief Nurse, Head of Nursing/Matron, participate in the planning and implementation of quality and risk management initiatives and targets, including CNST, RPST and Controls Assurance requirements.

As part of the Professional Development Team participate in the development and maintenance of evidence-based quality standards that are regularly audited, and initiate appropriate changes in practice.

In conjunction with the Head of Nursing/Matron, participate in agreed programmes of clinical benchmarking.

Conduct and lead appraisal for allocated staff, identifying development needs and ensure all staff have a Personal Development Plan.

Support ward staff to acquire the appropriate clinical competencies to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Ensure all staff are supported and supervised in a way that promotes professional development, patient safety and well-being.

In conjunction with the Head of Nursing/Matron, assist in the supervision and performance management of bank staff.

Identify and action own development needs and establish personal clinical supervision/mentorship.

Provide support to staff completing clinical and legal nursing documents to ensure they are completed accurately and legibly, that their relevance is understood and confidentiality sustained in accordance with Trust policy and NMC guidelines.

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, participate in agreed programmes of clinical benchmarking.

Conduct and lead appraisal for Team Staff, identifying development needs.

Support staff to acquire the appropriate clinical competencies to deliver safe and effective patient care.

Provide guidance and support to staff in a way that promotes patient safety and well-being and their own professional development.

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, assist in the supervision and performance management of bank staff within the Emergency Department.

Identify and action own development needs and establish personal clinical supervision/mentorship.

In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, help to develop and implement a programme for clinical supervision for staff.

Help the Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure that all new staff undergo orientation and induction specific and relevant to the clinical area.

Ensure that all staff are aware of when and how to report untoward incidents and how to deal effectively with patients’ or relatives’ complaints.
