Job overview

Are you a pharmacist looking for a new challenge in acute and emergency medicine?

We’re seeking an experienced clinical pharmacist to join our Acute & Emergency Medicine team at the Royal Stoke site. You’ll help deliver a high‑quality clinical pharmacy service across AMU, Short Stay, AMRA, AEC, and the Emergency Department, working in a fast‑paced environment caring for complex, high‑acuity patients.

You’ll work closely with our multidisciplinary teams and with pharmacy colleagues across both UHNM sites, benefiting from extensive training, development, research, and networking opportunities. You’ll also train and support the development of junior pharmacists completing acute and emergency medicine rotations.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has proven experience in delivering evidence‑based, cost‑effective pharmaceutical care
  • Can support team development and contribute to financial and risk management
  • Is enthusiastic about acute and emergency medicine and thrives in a busy clinical setting

If you are interested in such a post, but do not yet fully meet the person specification for the 8a role, a structured development post (initially as a Band 7) may be offered to the successful candidate. Once you have demonstrated that you meet the person specification for the 8a role and have met the key development objectives agreed once in post, then you would transition to the 8a role.

Main duties of the job

  • Utilise expert pharmaceutical knowledge to manage acutely ill patients in the acute and emergency setting.
  • Prioritise patients at risk of missing critical medicines e.g. epilepsy, insulin, parkinson’s disease. Ensure these are prescribed and administered in a timely manner.
  • Utilise the independent prescriber skill daily within your scope of practice (or work towards obtaining).
  • Provide prescriber support for complex medicine regimes e.g. gentamicin, vancomycin, aminophylline infusions.
  • Support flow with efficient discharge medication supply routes in and out of hours.
  • Review adverse incident reports and educate medical and nursing teams on pharmaceutical issues to lessen risk.
  • Review and develop guidelines and PGDs. Develop cost improvement initiatives.
  • Train, develop and line manage junior and trainee pharmacists.
  • Work with the Advanced Clinical Lead Pharmacist for Acute and Emergency Medicine on the strategic development of the clinical pharmacy service to our Emergency Departments and Acute Medicine.
