Job overview

An  opportunity has arisen within the Respiratory, Sleep and Ventilation Physiology Team at UHDB for a permanent Band 7 Advanced Healthcare Scientist. This senior role will provide professional and operational leadership for the respiratory physiology service, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), across all UHDB sites.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in respiratory physiology investigations, sleep diagnostics and therapeutic services. You will be competent in independently reporting lung function tests and overnight sleep studies, and will have the expertise and confidence to review and authorise reports produced by other healthcare scientists. Proven experience in CPET is essential for this position, with non-invasive ventilation (NIV) experience highly desirable.

The post will be based primarily at Royal Derby Hospital, with a requirement to work cross-site at Queen’s Hospital Burton at least once per week. The role will also involve rotational work within UHDB community diagnostic centres, in line with service needs.

Closing date of applications: 28 May 2026

Interview date: 12 June 2026

Main duties of the job

  • Act as the Lead Healthcare Scientist for Respiratory Physiology, including CPETT, providing clinical, professional and operational leadership across all UHDB sites.
  • Lead and contribute to the development, transformation and continuous improvement of respiratory physiology services.
  • Provide day‑to‑day operational management of the service, including waiting list oversight, triage and prioritisation of referrals.
  • Perform, interpret and independently report and authorise a comprehensive range of respiratory investigations, including complex lung function, sleep studies, and CPAP/NIV assessment and treatment.
  • Oversee, review, authorise and peer‑review reports produced by junior staff, providing clinical supervision, professional guidance and quality assurance.
  • Deliver and support staff training, competency assessment and ongoing professional development for healthcare scientists and students.
  • Participate and lead MDT meetings.
  • Ensure the safe, effective and economical use equipment, reporting faults and contributing to equipment evaluation and service planning.
  • Act as a professional role model, deputising for senior colleagues where required and responding appropriately to service pressures or clinical incidents.

HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist is highly desirable; applicants not currently registered will be expected to be working towards STP equivalence.
