An exciting opportunity for a hard-working, self-motivated and ambitious pharmacy technician to join the Respiratory team as an advanced Medicines Management Technician within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

This advanced clinical and leadership role will utilise the advanced clinical knowledge of a suitable pharmacy technician to provide a vital service to the staff and patients within Respiratory services at STH.

The respiratory service is based at Northern General Hospital. A clinical pharmacy service is provided to 4 inpatient wards, alongside general outpatient services. The post holder will work alongside the established clinical pharmacists and ward-based medicines management technicians (MMT) and Medicine management Assistant (MMA) providing the clinical pharmacy service. The expectation from the post holder is to develop the medicines management services to both inpatients and outpatients, coordinating and verifying the outpatient homecare prescriptions.

Above the standard roles and responsibilities of an MMT, to reach the band 6 level, the post holder will be  expected to have (or be working towards) clinical autonomy, with defined responsibilities. They will work within the multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate leadership across professional boundaries. They will need to have completed or be prepared to work towards a BTEC level 4 diploma in Pharmacy Clinical Services and Homecare Services- Prescription Verification and Clinical Validation Training Programme.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will:

  • Provide leadership, clinical supervision and professional development to the band 4-5 MMTs and band 3 MMA within respiratory medicine.
  • Develop and support team-based working across the inpatient wards on clinical need not geographical boundaries.
  • Contribute to the outpatient medicines management pathway for asthma/interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), developing new OP medicine pathways, triaging and responding to the pharmacy team e-mail inbox and assisting in biologic medicine switches or switches of homecare provider.
  • Manage the medicines supply queries from outpatients and co-ordinate the supply of medicines via homecare services.
  • Provide a level 1 verification of homecare prescriptions, after completion of appropriate competencies and following a verified SOP.
  • Maintain the safe, efficient, timely and cost-effective supply of medicines to patients on the wards of the Sheffield Teaching
  • Hospitals NHS Trust, supporting initiatives such as Medicines Assessment for Discharge (MA4D), self -administration and relevant patient education.
  • Support safe transfer of patients between care settings by completing medicines reconciliation, contributing to multidisciplinary discharge planning and liaison with healthcare professionals external to STH.
  • To contribute to the pharmacy departmental services including bank holidays, evenings and weekends.
