Main duties of the job

The post holder will practise independently as a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within the Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSDEC) pathway. This clinically focused role will include responsibilities in patient management, departmental coordination, service development, and contributions to education and mentorship.

The role will encompass advanced skills in assessment, examination, diagnosis, and treatment within an agreed scope of practice across the designated directorate. The post holder will support the safe management, referral, and discharge of patients within MSDEC, ensuring high standards of patient-centred care within the Division of Medicine.

The post holder will also be expected to maintain and further develop Walsall’s national reputation for excellence in advanced clinical practice. This will include contributing to the development of the ACP workforce and supporting the supervision of trainees, with a focus on increasing high-quality one-to-one support in collaboration with medical colleagues.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Systematically assess, examine, investigate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the service with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Support the coordination of clinical areas during shifts, contributing to patient flow and ensuring patients have clear and timely management plans.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of departmental integrated care pathways and contribute to the development and review of clinical guidelines.
  • Practise as an autonomous clinician, providing high-quality care within the MSDEC and medicine directorate, while supporting  trainee clinicians as part of the wider workforce.
  • Contribute to ensuring that each patient receives appropriate assessment and management to facilitate safe discharge, transfer, or admission to the relevant specialty.
