Job overview

To provide a full and comprehensive service for admissions to the Ophthalmology Department, liaising with Consultants, wards, peripheral hospitals and management in regards to all aspects of the inpatient service provided by the Department.

You will be the 3rd member of staff to join the admissions team for the Ophthalmology department.

The projected 3 storey unit will see an increased number of treatment rooms, Theatre space, expanded paediatric facilities and better access for patients, with a drop-off bay and parking immediately outside.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role are to provide a comprehensive inpatient admissions service to the Ophthalmology Department in an efficient and timely manner, in particular to manage the addition of patients to surgical waiting lists and the selection and booking of patients for admission in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.      Be responsible for placing patients onto the waiting list by transcribing from Medisoft/hospital notes using accurate coding for use with the electronic theatre scheduling (ETS).

2.      Manage the PTL selecting patients for admission on the basis of clinical priority and agreed protocols.

3.      Be responsible for arranging patient admissions in accordance with Clinical priority determined by the Medical Teams and chronological waiting list time.

4.      Ensuring any relevant investigations or pre-assessment appointments are booked, organising transport where necessary for the patients admission.

5.      Be responsible for informing wards of patients’ admission and ensuring that all patients’ notes and relevant x-rays and scan results are on the wards.

6.      Responsible for informing all wards of all cancellations and re-booking theatre lists, including finding all notes and x-rays.

7.      Be responsible for the daily Electronic Theatre schedule (ETS) by selection of order via Consultants decision and finalising the theatre list on the computer system

8.      Printing and distributing the theatre lists to ALL appropriate staff on a weekly basis

9.      Responsible for admitting patients who have been seen at the peripheral sites, liaising with the administrative teams there to ensure all patients are treated within the clinical times set out by the Consultants.

10.   Responsible for liaising with theatres, other Consultants and departments to facilitate patient’s admissions.
