Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated registered nurse to join our Acute Oncology Team as  a band 6. The successful candidate will need to have previous Oncology and/or SACT knowlege and be capable of working independently,  autonomously and also as part of a team.

You will be working in a small nurse-led Acute Oncology team based at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital who regularly liaise with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) at Northumbria Healthcare including Day Unit staff, visiting Consultants and other healthcare professionals to manage patints presenting with cancer treatemnt toxicities.

We have funding for 1wte but would consider job sharing

Main duties of the job

- Clinical assessment of unwell Oncology patients with Acute Oncology needs and liaison with day units and Oncologists.

- MDT Participation.

- Internal and external audits for Acute Oncology as required.

- SACT Mortality & Morbidity reviews.

- Trustwide teaching of Acute Oncology education including inter-departmental and students.

Candidates should have knowledge of SACT and oncology service and have significant post registration experience of managing toxicities.

Leadership experience, advanced knowledge , decision-making skills are essential and completion of, or a willingness to work towards the advanced clinical skills course or equivalent would be an advantage.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To be part of a team to deliver of an Acute Oncology Nursing Service
  • To monitor, evaluate and implement the highest standards of evidence / researched based care.
  • To undertake specific projects at the request of the Acute Oncology (AO) lead.
  • To participate in the delivery of an Acute Oncology Service – assessing, offering advice /treatment plans and evaluations of care. To review and implement care plans for patients presenting with acute oncology emergencies e.g. MSCC.
  • To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.
  • The postholder will be expected to be part of the on-call rota, for the emergency helpline
