The Royal Eye Unit is a well-established, high performing ophthalmology service based at Kingston Hospital is part of Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust (KRFT). It provides assessment and management as part of a regional system of care focused on improving population health locally and regionally.

The thriving Ophthalmology department runs busy outpatient clinics, an eye casualty service and day surgery lists provided by a dedicated multidisciplinary team of medical clinicians, in conjunction with a full range of allied health care professionals, specialist nurses, orthoptic & optometry teams.

The Royal Eye Unit is a purpose-built unit that supports outpatient consultations and treatments houses a dedicated eye theatre. There is shared access to a day case theatre for patients requiring covered lists. The facility has had extensive refurbishment and expansion to house a dedicated retinal suite and eye casualty to undertake Acute Referral Clinics.

### Main duties of the job

This is a full-time clinical post based at The Royal Eye Unit, Kingston Hospital, to provide elective and emergency care for ophthalmology patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.

There is no out of hours on-call commitment.

The post offers an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their clinical knowledge and skills in the management with patients with acute ophthalmology problems, cornea and cataract pathology.  It would be ideally suited for a candidate who has already received basic training in cataract surgery but is not fully independent and wishes to build up their experience and surgical numbers.

The Fellowship will be primarily supervised by Mr Vijay Shanmuganathan

## Person Specification

### Management Skills

**Essential**

- Evidence of Organisational skill and/or experience

**Desirable**

- Course or higher qualification in management
- Evidence of a completed quality improvement project

### Personal qualities

**Essential**

- Good written and verbal communication skills,
- Commitment to continuing professional development
- Team player and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Enthusiasm and approachable.

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Completed an Ophthalmology residency or training programme in UK or abroad
- Be competent to work in an eye casualty and deal with patients with acute ophthalmic problems
- Have undergone basic cataract surgery training and have completed a minimum of 30 full procedures

**Desirable**

- Experience working in a specialist corneal outpatient clinic
- Experience of cataract pre and post op assessment

### Education/Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council

**Desirable**

- Post graduate degree in Ophthalmology FRCOphth / FRCS or equivalent
- Masters degree or diploma in relevant subject
- Higher degree MD (in research) / PhD or equivalent

### Experience in Training, Audit and Research

**Essential**

- Experience in teaching / training of junior staff or allied specialities
- Understanding of the principles of clinical audit
- Understanding of the principles of research

**Desirable**

- Evidence of completed clinical audit(s)
- Relevant Publications
