We are looking for a committed and motivated clinically trained person who has a keen interest in training and developing best practice and an enthusiasm for safe handling practices.  You will have highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic and a commitment to research and evidence-based practice.

This post requires you to share and develop new and existing experience, skills and knowledge in this field to enhance the clinical practice and competency of staff in safe handling practices across the Trust.

Working alongside the Specialist Nurse Practitioner in Back Care in a small and supportive, friendly team, you will be dedicated to providing an expert service for staff and patients in all aspects of evidenced based safe handling practice, across all clinical and non-clinical areas of the Trust.

You will deliver regular and effective, fully inclusive and adapted educational and training courses across the Trust and work alongside staff in all areas to enhance and promote safe handling practices.  In addition, you will also afford expert practical advice, complete training needs analysis, undertake audits, complete ergonomic display screen assessments with staff, evaluate the impact of training, undertake clinical reviews and work with staff and patients with complex moving, handling and positional needs.

- The ability to assess learners’ understanding and responses in an educational and training environment and adapt training delivery to ensure that the course is fully inclusive to ensure that all learning outcomes are met. Analyse training evaluation forms and act upon feedback accordingly
- Work weekly within the clinical environments across Epsom and St Helier Hospitals to close the theory practice gap and to follow up on any issues raised during training and address the activity/task locally
- Assist the Departmental Manager in monitoring and analysing trends in falls data and provide localised training in the safe transfer of a fallen/collapsed/injured/successfully resuscitated or deceased patient off the floor using inflatable equipment designed to lift a patient in a supine position
- Assist the Departmental Manager in monitoring and analysing trends in reported incidents relating to handling practices or workplace ergonomics that lead to musculo-skeletal injuries, workplace ill health and related sickness absence
- Ability to undertake a comprehensive patient handling and activity specific risk assessments in all workplaces to include clinical and non-clinical areas across Epsom and St Helier Hospitals and identify and implement safe systems of work to ensure the delivery of safe handling practices
- Assist with the programme of audits and analyse the results and compile meaningful robust reports
- Undertake assessments of users of Display Screen Equipment and make appropriate ergonomic recommendations to address any identified postural issues and/or risks to the individual’s musculo-skeletal system.

Responsibilities Regarding Training

- Work autonomously to provide specialised education and training on handling practices to all groups and levels of staff across Epsom, St Helier and Leatherhead Hospitals.
- When required provide bespoke specialised training courses to specific staff groups showing flexibility in approach based on assessment of need.
- Monitor, evaluate and review current training content and arrangements, assisting with review and development of training programmes making improvements when necessary to keep programmes relevant, up to date and evidence-based in relation to Guidance from the various professional and regulatory bodies, Legislation and The National Back Exchange.
- Undertaking formative and summative assessments of the learner’s competence during all training courses, make recommendations and provide continuing support locally if required
- Carry out assessments of knowledge and skills in refresher and induction training, providing feedback and advising on further action, if needed.  Ensure any failure is communicated to the individual and their manager and ensure an action plan is developed and assist in its implementation locally if required
- Provide training in the use of handling equipment as appropriate for the learner’s job role related activities.

- Responsible for monitoring and reviewing handling practices and use of equipment by learners during all training courses and in clinical areas, providing constructive feedback based on formative and summative assessments and recommendations for further action if required.
- Assist with monitoring of practices and the choice and use of equipment in the working environments across Epsom and St Helier Hospitals.
- During all educational and training courses, participants must be made aware of the related Health and Safety procedures in Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, e.g. use of equipment, fire alarms, smoking, evacuation, etc.
- The post holder has a responsibility to themselves and others in relation to managing risks, health and safety and will be required to work within the policies and procedures laid down by the Group.

- The post holder will be responsible for monitoring and improving the quality of educational and training courses by ensuring that they deliver current evidenced based practice and keep themselves up to date.
- To identify and liaise with the Departmental Manager on areas for development in relation to the delivery of education and training and specific clinical issues
- To contribute and assist with training needs analysis, surveys, equipment monitoring, audits and evaluation as required

Quality and Learning and Development

- Responsible and accountable for maintaining the quality of own work, alerting the Departmental Manager  to any quality issues affecting own work priorities and service delivery and provision and to identify solutions where possible
- Contributing to and improving the quality of training delivery in relevant clinical and non-clinical areas
- Prioritise own workload and organise and carry out own work in an agreed timeframe
