To take responsibility for the Health, Safety and Welfare of self and others and to comply at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety Regulations and the Trust’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an integral part of the Trauma and Orthopaedic team. They will be based in the Plaster room within the fracture clinic, GRH and will undertake a minimum time period within this environment.

During the initial induction period, the post holder will undertake a planned schedule where they will learn all aspects of health, safety and hygiene of the Plaster Room environment.  They will be supported in answering patient queries and concerns, understand the materials required for different casts, removal of casts and application of Plaster of Paris casting.

They will also learn how to measure and issue walking devices and fitting of “off the shelf” splintage.

Prior to commencement on a fully funded Stanmore or Newport British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Casting Course, the post holder will be supplied with a workbook which will include pre-requisites such as understanding of anatomy and physiology of the skeletal, muscular, nervous and circulatory systems.

The workbook will be competency based and the post holder will work through the learning outcomes with the support of a mentor, who will be a fully qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner.

- Undertake all aspects  of the role expectations and requirements prior to the commencement of  the BOA Casting Course.

- Contribute significantly to the vision of the service and improving patient experience and outcomes.

- Provide advice and compassionate care with designated area of responsibility.

- To ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments.

- To work in accordance with the Trust’s policies to eliminate unlawful discrimination and promote equality and diversity in the workplace.

- To positively promote at all times equality of opportunity in service delivery and employment in accordance with Trust policies, regardless of age, disability, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin, gender, religion, belief, sexual orientation or domestic circumstances.

- To adhere to the Trust Infection Control Policy, procedures and guidelines, including use of PPE, and in particular practice strict hand hygiene at all times while carrying out clinical duties, in line with the responsibilities placed on employees by the Health Act 2006: Code of Practice for the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HCAIs). The prevention and control of HCAIs must be embedded into everyday clinical practice and applied consistently. All clinical staff hold responsibility for ensuring they have sound knowledge of standard infection control precautions and that no omission on their part or within the sphere of their responsibility is detrimental to the interests or safety of their patients, visitors and colleagues. Clinical staff must keep their infection control knowledge and skills up to date by attending the Trust’s mandatory infection control training, a record of which will be kept and information provided to line managers as required.

All clinical staff hold responsibility for ensuring they have sound knowledge of standard infection control precautions and that no omission on their part or within the sphere of their responsibility is detrimental to the interests or safety of their patients, visitors and colleagues.
