### Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to begin a professional career in biomedical science while earning, learning, and gaining a fully funded degree. As an apprentice, you will train within an IBMS-approved NHS laboratory, developing the skills required for HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist. You will contribute directly to patient care by supporting the diagnosis and monitoring of disease through the analysis of blood, tissue, and other biological samples. You will combine academic study with hands-on laboratory experience in a real clinical environment, working alongside experienced Biomedical Scientists across a range of pathology disciplines and contributing to patient diagnosis and care.

### Main duties of the job

*To carry out Pathology investigations of patient samples under supervision as requested by the Clinical Services.

*To operate and assist in maintenance of laboratory equipment according to departmental and manufacturer's protocols and procedures.

*To ensure agreed standards for turnaround times of samples and results are met.

*To follow departmental operating procedures for Pathology analyses and undertake proper maintenance of equipment used.

*To ensure work is completed and a handover is communicated prior to leaving a section.

*Contribute to development of clinical guidelines and laboratory protocols.

*Support implementation of quality and safety initiatives within the department.

*Participate in audit, data collection, and reporting for service improvement.

*To be familiar and competent with procedures for dealing with the safe handling of biological and chemical materials in a laboratory environment, dealing with spillages in a safe manner.

*To be familiar and competent with procedures for safe use of equipment in the laboratory.

*Work within agreed protocols and under supervision.

*Exercise independent judgement appropriate to level of experience.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- *Demonstrates interest in biomedical science, pathology, or healthcare science.
- *Basic understanding of scientific principles and laboratory work (academic or practical).
- *Awareness of the role of diagnostic laboratories in patient care.
- *Commitment to learning and professional development in a clinical environment

**Desirable**

- *Previous laboratory experience (academic, school, college, or work placement).
- *Understanding of basic quality systems (e.g. following procedures or protocols).
- *Experience working in a team-based environment.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- *Eligibility to undertake a Level 6 Biomedical Science Degree Apprenticeship.
- *GCSE (or equivalent) Level 2 Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above).
- *A-Levels BBC-ABB (or equivalent Level 3 qualification). Must include two science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths).
- *Right to work in the UK

**Desirable**

- *Laboratory-based qualification (e.g. Applied Science BTEC or equivalent).
- *Evidence of study in biomedical/health-related science.
- *Experience of structured academic study in science disciplines.
