This is an exciting time to join the existing AP team in the Emergency Department here at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and we are looking for a Trainee Advanced Practitioner who is able to complement our existing team.

At Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust we are committed to ensuring that we provide the optimal quality care for patients in our Emergency Department. This post is for an initial 3 year period at band 7 while a qualification in advanced practice is completed, at which point the postholder would transition into a substantive AP post at band 8a.

### Main duties of the job

- To work autonomously but with close supervision in the planning and delivery of care and interventions of patients attending the Emergency Department including paediatrics and adults with specialities which include but are not limited to - trauma, resuscitation, mental health, medical, surgical, gynaecological and Minor Illness / Injury presentations.
- To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework to ensure the highest quality of care is provide in the safest manner
- To engage in education and training provided by Advanced Care Practitioners and medical staff relating to the effective management and delivery of care to patients within the Emergency Department.
- To participate in the continuing improvement of services in line with the Trust objectives and assist the Advanced Care Practitioners in the delivery and development of the Emergency Department using evidence based practice to provide the highest standards of holistic care.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Autonomously assess patients using highly developed clinical skills and clinical judgement to plan and implement often complex care for patients whilst being accountable for the care provided ensuring care meets the needs of individual patients
- Make clinical judgements involving a range of facts and situations which require analysis or comparison of a range of options
- Provide expert and specialist advice related to assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment of condition/s for first point of contact through to discharge or referral
- Deliver expert and specialist clinical care which may involve a range of advanced clinical skills, e.g. physical assessment of patients using clinical skills, inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation, cranial nerve examination, breast examination, reduction/manipulation of dislocations and fractures to major joints and limb threatening injuries in addition to more minor injuries.
- Develop, deliver and evaluate the emergency care to meet the needs of patients and carers
- Ensure the delivery of an environment where health promotion and informed patient choice is encouraged and developed to its maximum potential, with the available resources
- Take a lead in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care for individual patients in partnership with the patient and the multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrate expert and specialist knowledge and skills through practice of the highest standard
- Autonomously plan and organise patient care, with an ability to prioritise own caseload within the department based on the short and longer term clinical needs of individual patients

### Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

**Essential**

- Significant emergency / urgent care practitioner experience
- Clinical care, assessment, diagnosis and care planning
- Experience of change management
- Substantial experience of care delivery
- Evidence of innovation in practice

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- RN, current NMC registration or Paramedic or Allied Health Professional with a Registered Professional qualification
- Relevant degree
- Non-medical prescribing qualification
- Clinical skills course (Level 7)
- ALS or APLS provider status
- A teaching qualification

**Desirable**

- Paediatric Clinical skills
- ATLS
- ALS/APLS Instructor
- ATNC
- GIC course

### Skills, Knowledge and Aptitude

**Essential**

- Expert knowledge, clinical skills and experience in urgent care / emergency medicine
- Advanced clinical skills and history taking
- Work autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills
