Awarded outstanding by CQC.  We are looking for an experienced, motivated, forward thinking, ODP/ Registered Nurse to work in our Surgical Theatre department. Our oncology theatre suite specialises in colorectal, plastics, urology and gynaecology; inclusive of robotic surgery, microsurgery and laparoscopic surgery.

### Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will hold the appropriate qualifications to be a current registered practitioner (RGN or ODP) and demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development. You will be committed to delivering high quality care with a desire to further develop your career within this rewarding specialty. You will need to have very good communication skills, be highly motivated, organised and be able to work using your own initiative.

We are welcoming applications to the scrub team, experience preferred but not essential. Newly qualified staff will be supported with a 12-month preceptorship and in house support from the education team and wider colleagues.

You will be required to work 37.5 hours, 4 days flexibly over 7 days (Monday to Sunday) however current elective hours are Monday – Friday with a commitment to out of hours on call

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Education, Leadership and Clinical Practice

- To participate as a member of the Theatre team with extensive knowledge in the care of the peri-operative patient.
- To demonstrate high standards of individual patient care with a commitment to the development of evidence-based practice.
- To competently care for the peri-operative patient including the assessment, planning and evaluation of programs of care.
- Liaise and integrate with the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care and promote a team approach to working.
- Develop good working relationships and promote effective communication between all clinical grades of staff within the multi-disciplinary team.
- Ensure proficiency with all medical equipment before use in accordance with the trust medical device policy.
- Liaise with the peri-operative teams to initiate and participate in the audit and evaluation of clinical practice and surgical products in the interest of promoting quality care.
- Work with senior colleagues to formulate practice development strategies based on audit findings.
- Encourage and participate in initiatives to enhance quality care.
- The post holder will be proactive towards change and change management.
- To promote and maintain an environment conducive to professional development.
- Take responsibility for your own professional development.
- Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners, trained and untrained, including medical students and other allied medical professions.
- To monitor the progress of learners and in particular their skills in carrying out practical procedures.

- Act as a clinical role model for new staff, reflecting the philosophy, beliefs and standards of the department.
- Ensure that all prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with Trust policy, including the correct care and custody of controlled drugs.
- Offer help and advice to the patient’s relatives and friends responding to their individual needs in a caring supportive manner.
- Ensure safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.
- Assist in the maintenance of good order and cleanliness of the clinical area, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Have access to and maintain computerised patient records in accordance with Trust policy.
- After training be able to use the scan track system and track/trace all medical devices used in theatre. Demonstrate the mandatory competencies of the Trust, attending all mandatory updates.
- Under direction of a senior colleague work in role of Theatre co-ordinator.
- To be part of “the on call team” as per the departments rota to provide an emergency cover out of hours, weekend and bank holidays and as and when the department requires.

### Professional Responsibilities

- Maintain registration and nursing and ODP competencies and comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and related documents.

- Maintain own professional status and ensure that the NMC or HCPC requirements for registration are met and adhered to.
- Ensure all relevant nursing policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to.
- Maintain a safe environment for yourself and others, taking reasonable care to avoid injury. Co-operate with the Trust to meet statutory requirements.
- Provide statements regarding untoward incidents, as requested by the Senior Nurse
- Ensure all staff attend Trust mandatory training annually
