Job overview

Reporting to the Head of Business Intelligence the Technical Database Administrator (DBA) will act as a senior technical specialist, leading on the design, implementation, and optimisation of the Trust’s on-premise SQL Server Business Intelligence Data Warehouse. The postholder will work closely with the Business Intelligence and Cancer Services teams to support data migration, ingestion, and implementation of SQL queries required for accurate and timely reporting.

You will play a key role in integrating data from multiple clinical and corporate systems, including Oracle Cerner Millennium and the Cancer Management System (CMS), ensuring that all data pipelines are robust, secure, and aligned with NHS standards and governance requirements.

The role is technically hands-on, involving the deployments, configuration, and maintenance of SQL Server databases, storage systems, and related infrastructure. The postholder will apply advanced knowledge of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, data modelling, performance tuning, and scripting to optimise data workflows and enable high quality analytics, whilst ensuring full compliance with NHS Digital, Information Governance, and industry best practice standards.

Main duties of the job

  • The postholder will provide technical leadership across the BI and system managers, troubleshooting complex database issues, managing incident resolution, and leading root cause analysis to reduce downtime and maintain system resilience.
  • As a key contributor to the Trust’s ongoing digital transformation, you will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing the data architecture and migration that underpin analytics and reporting capabilities.
  • Design and implement a data management and ingestion framework to support operational and analytical reporting requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimise logical and physical data models for the BI Data Warehouse, ensuring scalability and alignment with NHS data standards.
  • Configure, automate, and document SQL server maintenance plans, jobs, and ETL processes for seamless data integration across multiple clinical systems (e.g. Oracle Cerner Millennium and Cancer Management System).
  • Develop automation scripts and tools using PowerShell, Python, or similar programming languages to streamline data ingestion, monitoring, and maintenance tasks.
  • Act as the technical lead for SQL Server databases, providing advanced  problem solving and root cause analysis for complex incidents and ensuring high availability of critical data services.
  • Produce technical documentation, highlight reports, and exception reports to support governance, audit, and project monitoring requirements.
