Team Chaplain

Department: Chaplaincy

Band  6

Hours: 30 hours per week plus on call (covering minimum of 1 night per week on call and one weekend per month.)

You will be motivated and passionate about providing excellent pastoral, spiritual and religious care to patients, visitors and staff including out of hours and in emergency situations. You will be a caring highly skilled listener able to be responsive to people in distress and deliver ritual care which is culturally informed, and person centred.

You will work within the clear boundaries of the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy’s code of conduct, respecting people of all faiths and worldviews, including non-religious beliefs, to provide compassionate support in collaboration with other members of the MKUH team. You will contribute to caring for service users at Willen Hospice and the Campbell Centre mental health unit as part of service level agreements.

Please note that this post is subject to an initial probationary period of six months, extendable up to a period of 12 months. A DBS check may be required for new employees. MKUH promotes an inclusive workforce and proactively welcomes applications from underrepresented groups in our community.

The Team Chaplain is responsible for:

- Participating in the development, management and provision of the Trust’s Chaplaincy Service.
- Contributing to the visible pastoral presence of Chaplains throughout the hospital.
- Ensuring that the pastoral, spiritual, religious, sacramental, ritual and cultural requirements of users are met wherever possible, and are appropriate and sensitive to their needs, background and tradition, whatever their worldview.
- Working collaboratively and respectfully within a multi-faith and belief, ecumenical Chaplaincy team, which includes volunteers.
- Sharing with the wider team in facilitating the provision of care that meets the needs of people of all faiths and beliefs, including developing and strengthening links with the local faith and belief communities.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To participate in developing the vision for the chaplaincy service in line with the Trust’s strategic direction, ensuring this is underpinned by appropriate policies and guidance.
- To ensure that all members of the chaplaincy team are fully integrated into the service and that they are selected, screened, trained and supervised appropriately.

Provision of pastoral and spiritual care

- To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide/ensure the provision of pastoral, spiritual and religious care for patients, their relatives, staff, students and others.
- To be visible within the hospital and to visit patients, visitors and staff in all areas regularly and, when requested, to provide appropriate support to the seriously ill and dying and accompany those in need.

Governance arrangements

- As part of the Chaplaincy team, to ensure that the Chaplaincy team respects the dignity, culture, beliefs and spiritual needs of each person and complies with the Trust’s requirements concerning equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- To provide advice and support to appropriate committees, working parties and project teams as may be set up in the Trust, and contribute to the development of relevant policies where required.

Training and education

- To share in leading and developing the Chaplaincy team’s commitment to training, teaching and learning.
- To share in the support and debriefing of staff when requested following difficult or traumatic situations.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Pastoral/ spiritual/ theological/philosophical understanding of health and wholeness
- Excellent listening and pastoral skills
- IT competent

**Desirable**

- Understanding of NHS structure and practice
- Liturgical/ ritual skills
- Experience of supporting people in crisis and debriefing people following traumatic and crisis situations.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of complex pastoral work.
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively
- Experience of Healthcare Chaplaincy
- Endorsed by, or able to be endorsed by, the appropriate faith or belief group.

### Communication

**Essential**

- Excellent communication skills
- Able to offer gentle and supportive communication for a person in distress.

**Desirable**

- Experience of public speaking and delivering training

### Qualifications and knowledge

**Essential**

- Accreditation/licensing with authority to practice as a world religion or belief leader/representative and/or pastoral worker within a faith or belief group belonging to the Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health.
- Degree in Theology, philosophy or another relevant discipline

**Desirable**

- Further Studies relating to Healthcare Chaplaincy (Diploma, Masters.)
