### Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Support Worker to join the Short Breaks Service based at The Croft.

The post holder will be a member of a team that is based in the 7 bedded home. It provides short breaks and outreach support for children with learning disabilities.

In addition to the home, we also provided support to children and young people in their own homes, local community and provide day care during the school holidays.

Staff work alongside colleagues, and this includes senior staff. There are frequent occasions however when they will work without direct supervision and are required to manage their own workload.

The post holder will work with children and familys supporting vulnerable children and young people ensuring their general wellbeing needs are identified, met and maintained. They will be expected to carry out a wide range of duties as part of a team and independently to ensure a high level of quality care is delivered for the children.

The post holder will participate in providing and maintaining a homely environment promoting Ordinary life Principles respecting the dignity and rights of the children accessing the Short Breaks Service.

### Job responsibilities

Supporting children and young people in a variety of settings including the Croft, accessing community activities and in the family home.

Assist children and young people with all aspects of daily living such as washing, dressing, medication and mobility.

Maintain privacy and dignity of the children when assisting with personal care.

Contribute to the holistic assessment and support of the children to ensure their general wellbeing needs are identified, met and maintained.

Follow and implement care plans as directed.

Communicate effectively with children and young people and significant others. This could include children with communication difficulties and behaviours that could be challenging.

Follow communication plans and utilise communication tools as directed by the speech and language therapist to communicate effectively with the children.

Participate in the administration of medication and recording in accordance with the medication policy.

Establish ongoing communication and partnership approaches between children and their families, Health and Social Care representatives and any other relevant agencies or individuals to ensure a joined up and effective care experience.

Participate in the delivery of high-quality evidence-based service provision working within the boundaries of The Childrens Law (2008) HSC Policies and Procedures, Childrens Homes Regulations (2011) and National Minimum Standards for Childrens Homes (2011).

Work in partnership with childrens families and other professionals to ensure plans are formulated and adhered to and that where possible the childs views are an integral part of the process and implementing it within practice.

Help ensure the daily routine of running The Croft is maintained. The post holder will be required to undertake administration and domestic tasks including cooking, cleaning and home maintenance during shifts as directed by the team leaders.

Ensure all documentation is recorded accurately, concisely and in non-judgemental language, in a timely manner in line with best practice/policy and procedures.

Work within boundaries relating to protecting and safeguarding children and young people and know when and how to refer a concern about Child Protection. Follow HSC policies and procedures regarding health and safety and report through the correct systems when necessary.

Understand the purpose and participate fully in supervision and appraisals regarding your work and development needs and attend regular staff meetings to keep up to date with current team issues.

To attend and fully participate in training as directed by the manager of the Short Break Service.

Work as a flexible member of a team and be committed to promoting anti discriminatory practices.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Strong communication skills, empathy, patience, problem-solving, and the ability to
- manage challenging behaviour.
- To be able to demonstrate organisational skills and a good standard of literacy and
- numeracy with the proven ability of completing administrative tasks and maintaining
- clear, concise records.
- Good information technology skills to use Microsoft Office and other bespoke
- computer software.
- Ability to relate to children with empathy and to work with a child centred approach
- together with an appreciation and commitment to anti-discriminatory practice.
- The ability to work effectively in a team and independently use own initiative
- Hold a valid B1 driving licence.
- A practical and flexible approach to work, willing to work unsocial hours, weekends,
- overnight stays and bank holidays.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of HSCs CARE Values.

**Desirable**

- Previous experience of working with children with learning disabilities.
- Have or willingness to develop a knowledge of child development and the different needs associated with learning disability and/or complex health, physical, sensory and behaviour needs.
- The postholder will be supported to achieve either of the following within an agreed timeframe:
- Band 3 Competency Pathway, or
- Level 3 BTEC Advanced Certificate in Positive Behavioural Support
