### Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Neurosurgery Department for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our very busy and dedicated admin team.

### Main duties of the job

You will provide secretarial and administrative support to our clinical team and a professional service to our patients.

You will be expected to work efficiently, with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.   You will have the ability to use your initiative and manage, prioritise and complete your workload while working under pressure.

Home working may be available to the successful candidate once the training period has been completed.

Please note:- Internal applicants on permanent contracts can apply for this post as a secondment or fixed term contract. For secondments you must have the approval of your line manager before applying. If you are an internal applicant currently on a fixed term contract you are able to apply for this as a fixed term position.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Competent with standard IT software programmes eg. Microsoft word, excel, access, outlook
- Ability to produce work quickly and accurately to a high standard of presentation
- Well developed interpersonal skills – able to liaise effectively with a wide range of people including medical staff and patients
- Ability to prioritise, meet tight deadlines and work independently
- Able to deal with difficult and distressed patients in an appropriate manner

**Desirable**

- Ability to touch type

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Understands the importance of confidentiality/data protection issues
- Understanding of the emotional distress of some patients and families

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of the Trust including awareness of the Trust's priorities
- Knowledge of Trust information systems
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology

### Experience

**Essential**

- Significant previous secretarial and/or administrative experience
- Proven track record in office practice and clerical procedures
- Experience of developing and managing databases

**Desirable**

- Previous experience of working in the NHS
- Previous experience of working within medical records
- Experience of call handling
- Experience of dealing with difficult situations and confrontations

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Good standard of general education
- Appropriate administrative and secretarial qualifications Admin /ITQ or equivalent experience
