Neurological Rehabilitation Staff Nurse

Band 5

Magnolia Ward at Tickhill Road Hospital is a Neurological Rehabilitation in patient facility with 8 beds offering rehabilitation to individuals who have neurological illness and disability. Our patients can experience physical difficulties, cognitive difficulties and social difficulties so the rehabilitation that we provide is truly holistic to their needs.

Our patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation approach with a team which comprises of Medical staff, Nursing staff, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy and Rehabilitation Assistants.

### Main duties of the job

We have an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Staff Nurse to join our team in delivering neurological rehabilitation. The successful applicant will be an autonomous practitioner and work alongside the team whilst taking responsibility for coordinating and managing the shift. They will provide clear direction to the Rehabilitation Assistant staff and maintain a flexible patient focused approach in managing complex situations.

Neurological Rehabilitation is both rewarding and challenging and the post holder will be supported to use clinical assessment skills to develop patient centred care plans. They will be supported to further develop by having access to:

- regular clinical and managerial supervision;
- specialist rehabilitation nursing staff knowledge;
- facilitated reflective practice sessions;
- in house and external training;
- post-graduate neurological rehabilitation training.

The successful applicant should be a Registered Nurse. They should have recent evidence of competence in caring for people with physical disabilities and physical health needs and experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team. Experience working within neurology or rehabilitation would be desirable.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- NHS experience
- Experience of working in a professional nursing role with patients with physical health needs
- Knowledge and experience of working in a multi-disciplinary setting.

**Desirable**

- Experience of working within neurology or with clients with neurological long term conditions
- Experience of working in a intermediate care/ rehabilitation setting with relevant transferrable skills
- Experience of working within a hospital ward
- Experience of working with clients with long term conditions in the community

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Current, active NMC registration
- RN, RMN or RNLD with recent evidence of competence skills in caring for people with physical health needs

**Desirable**

- mentorship qualification
- Evidence of post-qualification studies

### Knowledge and Skills

**Essential**

- Valid and current evidence of education and training to achieve registration as Nurse with NMC – current students due to complete will be considered.
- Evidence of learning from reflection and self-directed study
- Good awareness of NHS policy, national strategies and legislation including Mental Capacity Act and evidence based practice in Rehabilitation/intermediate care.
- Ability to work single handily without direct supervision and to organise own workload, and delegate appropriately
- Understanding of team dynamics and an awareness of how to be an effective team member
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including the processing of complex and sensitive information.
- Basic word processing and internet skills.
- Basic knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance.
- Good personal organisational skills, including effective planning and organisation of self and patient care.
- Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
- Health and Safety, and Security awareness.
- Good communicator – customer service skills.
- Ability to keep accurate and legible notes
- Ability to delegate tasks to Assistants appropriately.
- Ability to proactively assess and manage risk, both clinical and environmental
- Evidence of positive engagement in change management
