### Job overview

The post holder is expected to work under supervision, to assess, plan, implement, deliver and evaluate individualised patient care to critically ill patients, and their families. He/she is a novice/advanced beginner to Critical Care requiring guidance and training in order to acquire the complex skills required for proficient intensive care and high dependency nursing. He/she may not yet be an ICU trained practitioner but one who is working towards this.

Provides assessment, planning, organisation and co-ordination of care to Critically Ill patients

Establishes and maintains the highest standards of organisation and care delivery

Provides a working and training environment that allows all staff to perform their duties to the best of their ability

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To practise evidence/research-based care which is critically evaluated to ensure a high standard of care

As a member of the nursing team, participate in establishing a good environment in which patients receive a high standard of care

As a member of the nursing team, assist in setting standards and expectations in the quality of care

To make an active contribution to the nursing teams and current projects

To actively contribute in data collection and audit projects that are in progress in Critical Care and Trust wide

Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.

Inform the sister/charge nurse when changes occur in circumstances which affect standards of care

Take an active role in maintaining effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives

Ensure that all legal documents completed are both accurate and legible and their relevance and confidentiality is understood

To maintain standards of hygiene and cleanliness within the clinical area, making any necessary appropriate remedy and reporting deficits to Sister or Charge Nurse

Maintain and monitor a clean and safe environment within the clinical area in accordance with Trust Health and Safety, Clinical Risk and Infection Control Policies

## Person Specification

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Literacy and Numeracy will be tested on or before interview The post holder will be required to successfully complete the Introduction to Critical Care Course and National Step One Critical Care Competencies

### Experience

**Essential**

- Minimum acute hospital (NHS) experience

### Personal Qualities

**Essential**

- Motivated
- Able to use initiative
- Able to work as an effective team member
- Reliable Able to work a range of shifts including unsociable hours, internal rotation to nights and weekend shifts

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- RN Educated to Diploma/Degree level
