### Main duties of the job

- For the post holder to be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of post-operative patients and critically ill patients (Level 2) in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
- To be competent to manage and lead the unit with support from matron and unit manager.
- For the post holder to demonstrate specialist knowledge obtained through relevant post-registration course in caring for Level 1 or 2 post op patients and critically ill patients.
- To be responsible in supervising and teaching junior members of staff and pre-registration nurses/ODPs.
- To support an environment that promotes excellence in nursing practice and development of high level of clinical skills in post-anaesthetic care unit/recovery unit.

- To carry out duties in line with national and local post anaesthetic recovery care competencies, linked to professional codes of conduct (NMC/HCPC)
- To be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs following surgery and to implementation and evaluation an individualised of plan of care, maintaining evidence-based post anaesthetic care.
- To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility.
- To communicate with patients and significant others with empathy and reassurance regarding, assessment, care and treatment.
- To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records/documentation for patients.

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to explain clinical information clearly
- Ability to assess clinical situations, prioritise workload and make appropriate decisions within scope of practice
- Ability to supervise and delegate tasks appropriately, ensuring safe delivery of care by others
- Ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to changing clinical demands
- Demonstrates IT literacy sufficient to accurately record patient information and access clinical systems
- Ability to manage challenging or complex situations in a calm and professional manner
- Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion in patient care and team working

### Experience & Knowledge

**Essential**

- Demonstrable post-registration experience in post-anaesthetic recovery (including Level 1/2 patient care)
- Evidence of delivering safe, individualised patient care including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Working knowledge of recovery principles and procedures
- Experience of supervising, supporting or supervising junior staff or students in a clinical setting
- Experience of participating in audit, quality improvement or service development activities

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of clinical governance, risk management and patient safety processes
- Experience in taking charge and leading the recovery department

### Education/Qualifications

**Essential**

- Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with current professional registration
- Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to post-anaesthetic/recovery care (e.g. CPD portfolio, study days, or accredited modules)

**Desirable**

- Post-registration qualification or accredited course in recovery, anaesthetics, or critical care
