### Job overview

The primary role will be as Specialty Doctor, working under the supervision of a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist providing medical input to assessments and care of female patients at Ardenleigh.

Ardenleigh hospital has 30 beds as part of a women’s blended secure service as well as an adolescent secure care service comprising 17 medium and low secure beds.

The post holder will provide support with the day-to-day psychiatric assessment and management of a complex patient group. In addition to regular inpatient reviews and report writing, there will be opportunities to undertake assessments for patients referred to the service. The post also includes a role in overseeing physical health care.

You will need to have completed a minimum of four year’s postgraduate training at least two of which will be within a psychiatry training programme or have equivalent experience and competences.

You will carry out initial assessments for patients referred to the service particularly with regards to their physical and mental health needs and provide ongoing assessment of inpatients, with this feeding into the formulation and development of care plans.

You will also be involved in developing risk assessment and management plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, service user, carers and other involved agencies and facilitate empowerment of the service user and carer in developing informed choice of treatment interventions.

There will be a range of other opportunities to develop skills and experience, for example in Quality Improvement, Clinical Governance and in Teaching and training.

## Person Specification

### Scoring

**Essential**

- Recognised medical degree
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
- Eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act.
- Completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be within a psychiatry training programme or as a fixed term specialty trainee within psychiatry; or have equivalent experience and competences.
- Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
- Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development.
- Commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement within multi-disciplinary team.
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing service needs.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrable interest in the provision of a mental health service that ensures equality, diversity and inclusion
- Able to travel across the community base area

**Desirable**

- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
- Broad clinical training in psychiatry including both inpatient and community service
- Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
- Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
- Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project
- Published research or audits
- Skills in working with individuals who are difficult to engage.
