An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor to join the UHCW dermatology department.

UHCW NHS Trust is one of the leading teaching hospitals in the UK and is the home of Warwick Medical School, providing wide ranging opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. It is housed in a new PFI building, opened in 2007, and provides state of the art facilities for the delivery of medical care. The trust provides local services to a population of 450,000 in the Coventry and Rugby area, and receives tertiary referrals from the wider region.

A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic service for general Dermatological problems are provided at UHCW NHS Trust together with a number of specialist services across the hospital sites at University Hospital Coventry (UH), the Hospital of St Cross Rugby (RStX), George Elliot Hospital Nuneaton (GEH), City of Coventry Health Centre (COCH).

The successful candidate will join a team of 7 consultants, 3 Specialist Registrars, 4 Specialty Doctors and 1 SHO and will be expected to actively support the delivery of first class Dermatology service for the Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all disciplines to provide an integrated service for patients.

### Main duties of the job

As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies. Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.

The post holder will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, ensuring safe handover as appropriate. The post holder will provide a prompt dermatology opinion on request from colleagues in other specialties. The post holder will play an integral part in the Dermatology Service. The successful candidate will assist with General Dermatology clinics, Specialist Clinics, Minor Surgery Clinics and review inpatients. The post holder will provide a high quality service in liaison with the other Dermatologists, Nursing staff and General Practitioners.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The general functions of the Specialty Doctor would include:

Clinical Function:

- Assessment, investigation and treatment planning of patients referred to the services.
- Provision of a range of clinical interventions, including skin surgery, cryotherapy and the use of oral and topical treatments as indicated.
- The post holder may take part in a weekday daytime (9am to 5pm) on call rota that is shared with 3 dermatology specialty registrars.
- There is an opportunity to attend weekly skin cancer MDT where all major cases are discussed.
- The post holder can elect to take part in an optional 1:6 out of hours non-resident on call
- Rota (weekday evening 5pm-8pm and weekend 9am-5pm). If the appointee elects to take part in the out of hours on call rota, the appointee would be expected to provide advice to colleagues by telephone or review patient if requested.
- The post holder should contribute to the activity of the department and take on other roles and responsibilities as required. There is a continuous responsibility for teaching, training and supervision of junior staff. Involvement in teaching of undergraduates, nurses and allied health professionals is desirable. The appointee should attend clinical governance meetings and contribute to the audit programme.

Education and Liaison

- Provision of advice and support to the local Practitioners/Nurses/Colleagues in the management of a broad range of dermatological conditions.

The core competencies that the Specialty Doctor will be expected to have will include:

- Evidence of knowledge and skills relevant to dermatology.
- Evidence of generalist skills: - Good communication skills - Competence in teaching and training and a commitment to cascading knowledge and skills
- Evidence of Audit.
- Evidence of a training record.
- Evidence of maintenance of skills required for the service i.e. courses and self-directed learning.
- Evidence of good teamwork

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing patients with dermatological conditions
- Competence at core completion level in the management of medical emergencies, in patients and out patients
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Proficiency in a range of medical procedures (as defined by the core curriculum) as an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Able to prioritise clinical need
- Able to maximise safety and minimise risk

**Desirable**

- Evidence of some competences in the specialty, as defined by the relevant curricula
- Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification)
- Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
- Evidence of ST3 level procedural skills relevant to medical patients (clinical independence in central venous cannulation, chest drain insertion, joint aspiration, DC cardioversion, abdominal paracentesis)

### Experience

**Essential**

- Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of training
- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on an unselected medical take, during core training or equivalent. At least two year’s experience in managing patients with dermatological conditions

**Desirable**

- Able to manage complex dermatological conditions and perform skin cancer surgery to a high level

- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives
