### Job overview

This is a fixed term (min 12months) Specialty Doctor post in Medical Microbiology & Infection to the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT). The post is whole-time equivalent (Amounting to 10-programmed activities). The successful applicant will join a team of 7 consultants (6 full time equivalent), a Specialty Doctor , a Microbiology Specialty Registrar and a rotational Microbiology FY2 .

Remit will be to provide clinical microbiology and infection control services for Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (including participation in on call cover) as part of the wider Clinical Microbiology / Infection Team. Although expected to be able to work with some autonomy in line with their level of seniority, the postholder will always be working under the supervision of an Infection / Microbiology Consultant.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

### Main duties of the job

Provide high quality medical microbiology and infection control support to clinicians in hospital and community.

Work closely with other Consultant Microbiology & Infection colleagues, Antimicrobial pharmacists, Infection Control Team and Laboratory staff to provide high quality Microbiology and Infection Prevention & Control Service.

Support and contribute to the development of agreed protocols in antimicrobial usage in the hospital and for OPAT.

Conduct regular ward rounds and participate in MDTs, especially to promote prudent use of antimicrobials.

Be responsible for authorising accurate, timely and interpretive reports to the clinicians.

Support innovative measures in the department to improve quality and efficiency.

Participate and facilitate accreditation and other inspections by external agencies.

Participate in development of services with colleagues both in and outside the Trust

Liaising with microbiology staff within the ESEL Partnership and neighbouring Trust including the Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC).

Participate in day to day and on call infection prevention & control activities.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide, supported by the Consultant Microbiologists, clinical and laboratory services to the Trust.
- Take part in the cross-site on-call rota. On-call duties (Category A) include attending the laboratory at weekends (although IT resource can be made available to support provision of predictable weekend work from home).  On call commitment for the six month post is 26 weeknights and 4 weekends (Sat/Sun)
- Annual and study leave is covered internally with no locum cover.
- Undertake CME/CPD as required by the relevant medical Royal College and facilitated by funds from the Trust.
- Take part in clinical governance as a practicing clinician and to seek to maintain clinical and laboratory standards.
- Take part in audit using the Trust audit facilities.
- Teaching and training of resident doctors, medical students, scientific staff and other allied healthcare professionals
- Provide continuing clinical input for patients in the Trust’s care and, in partnership with colleagues, to work towards the smooth running of the department.
- The post holder would be expected to subscribe to the research governance policies of the organisation.
- The post holder may be required to undertake other duties appropriate for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology not otherwise specified.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Participation in clinical Microbiology/Infection on call rota.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Evidence of adequate training and  experience in Medical Microbiology  and Infection control.

**Desirable**

- Evidence of training and experience in Infectious Diseases.
- Experience and ability to take  managerial responsibility in a  Microbiology Department

### Clinical Audit

**Essential**

- Experience and ability to take  managerial responsibility in a  Microbiology Department
- Knowledge of the principles of  clinical audit and evidence of  participation.
- Evidence of commitment to  continuing professional  development (CPD) and lifelong  learning.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- MBBS or Equivalent medical  qualification
- Full registration (with a licence to  practise) with the General Medical  Council (GMC).
- Completion of at least 4 years’ full time postgraduate training (or its  equivalent gained on a part-time /  flexible basis). At least 2 out of 4  years’ postgraduate training should  be in specialty training programme  or as a fixed-term specialty trainee  in Medical Microbiology or  Infectious Diseases
- Equivalent experience and  competencies in Medical  Microbiology or Infectious  Diseases.
- Applicants that are either partially  or non-UK trained will be required  to show evidence of equivalence to  UK qualifications.
- Eligible to work in the UK.

**Desirable**

- Postgraduate training (4 Years in Microbiology
- MRCP or evidence of  equivalent qualification.
- FRCPath
- Additional higher qualification  e.g. MSc, PhD, MD
