An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Specialist Respiratory Physiologist to join the Respiratory Physiology team at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The post holder will support the delivery of respiratory diagnostic testing and will be required to work across both Cannock Chase Hospital and New Cross Hospital.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both autonomously and under pressure. They will be able to prioritise their own workload effectively while contributing to team working and supporting the development of junior staff. Evidence of continuing professional development is essential, alongside experience across a broad range of respiratory diagnostic investigations.

Applicants should hold a BSc or MSc, or equivalent qualification, and have completed ARTP professional examinations or demonstrate significant equivalent experience within a respiratory physiology department. Registration, or active progression towards registration, with the HCPC or the RCCP/AHCS voluntary register is expected. Part-time applicants will be considered.

We are looking to recruit an individual with an understanding of specialist healthcare science activities acquired through training to BSc and/or MSc level, or with an equivalent level of knowledge and experience. Applications are also encouraged from suitably qualified Band 5 Physiologists seeking progression to a senior Band 6 role or wishing to develop experience at this level.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work within the oxygen assessment, sleep/ventilation, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing services.

All members of the Respiratory Physiology team are involved across all aspects of the diagnostic service. The successful candidate will therefore be competent in both routine and advanced respiratory investigations and able to interpret and report findings, including providing verbal interpretation where required. You will maintain an up-to-date training record and actively contribute to your continuing professional development portfolio.

Previous experience in research and audit is desirable, as is experience of presenting work at national and/or international meetings. The role will include mentoring and supervision of less experienced physiologists, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff. Strong involvement in the training of junior healthcare professionals and competency assessment is also desirable.

**Essential**

- Act as a role model. Specifically with regard to respecting patient’s customs, values, spiritual beliefs, equality and diversity, confidentiality (information governance), health and safety and infection prevention.
- High degree of dexterity for use on a wide range of diagnostic equipment, invasive procedures undertaken – Arterial blood gas sampling.

**Desirable**

- Ability to teach highly specialist test theories and techniques to post graduate level student physiologists and medical students.
- Undertake research and development.
- Experience in presenting/chairing meetings/published author/represents professional body such as ARTP, BTS etc.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- BSc in Clinical Physiology/Healthcare Science or equivalent.
- Experience post basic qualification
- RCCP/HCPC registered or eligible for registration.
- ARTP Practitioner level qualification or part I and II examination
- BLS/ALS/ILS trained

**Desirable**

- Appropriate Clinical Physiology MSc qualification or equivalent.
- STP equivalence obtained/Clinical Scientist
- Management and leadership training

### Communication Skills

**Essential**

- Communicates complex test instructions that require maximal patient effort and provides adequate motivation to achieve accurate results.
- Communicates/discussion on diagnostic findings of sleep diagnostics and the possible impact on driving and the DVLA. Provides detailed instructions on CPAP during initiation of treatment.
- Provides advice internally and externally to other healthcare professionals on Respiratory Physiological testing.
- Alert appropriate staff to unusual results/unexpected findings or clinical concerns.
- Provide advice and raise concerns over the appropriateness of test referrals.
- Communicates service-related information to lead physiologist.

**Desirable**

- Experience working in a mentor role for junior staff and student practitioners.
- Provides advice internally and externally to other healthcare professionals on Respiratory Physiological testing.
- Experienced in dealing with complaints

### Experience and Skills

**Essential**

- Substantial experience working within a Lung Function/Respiratory Physiology department
- Knowledge and significant experience (minimum of 2 years) of a broad range of routine and advanced respiratory physiology procedures.
- Ability to work independently within established policies and procedures.
- Experience in undertaking staff appraisal and performance monitoring.
- Good customer care skills
- Experience in recruitment and selection processes
- Reporting of full lung function tests and other routine investigations

- Highly specialist expertise, underpinned by theory and experience.
- Knowledge of highly specialist procedures acquired through accredited courses
