### Job overview

The post will be primarily based at Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary, which is on the site of New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton; but the postholder will also be expected to undertake clinics at Cannock Eye Centre, on the site of Cannock Chase Hospital.

### Main duties of the job

Duties will include a varied Orthoptic case-load plus specialist ocular-motility, paediatric ophthalmology and stroke clinics; Receiving secondary & tertiary referrals, primary & secondary screening visual screening in clinics, schools & special schools.

The department provides undergraduate placements for Sheffield & Liverpool Universities. CPD opportunities are available via regular departmental reflective practice, audit & funding for external courses.

A diploma/degree in Orthoptics and HPC registration is essential. The postholder will be expected to travel between the hospital sites at New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital and various locations in the community to carry out clinics and visual screening.

The successful applicant will need to be prepared to work compressed hours which will require undertaking some evening clinics. The working pattern will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assess, diagnose treat & manage patients referred to the Orthoptic service in the acute unit and community settings and to develop an effective treatment plan.

Where appropriate, receive referrals from, and make referrals to:

- Other health professionals, including Ophthalmologists, Optometrist and Paediatricians
- Other agencies, including Educational Support Services for the Visually Impaired and Social Services Visual Rehabilitation Teams.

To undertake a clinic manager's role on rotation, overseeing the operation of daily clinics.

To perform Visual Field testing on Humphrey & Goldmann perimeters on patients referred by ophthalmology or neurology specialities .

## Person Specification

### Degree in Orthoptics

**Essential**

- Post-graduation experience

**Desirable**

- Single handed specialist hospital based clinics
- Experience of a specialist case load
- Additional experience at post graduate diploma level

### Patient Communication

**Desirable**

- Ability to amend nature of communication for high caseload of special needs/learning difficulties
- Ability to communicate information and prognosis for a range of health defects including visual impairment, which may be of a sensitive nature and have consequences for patients’ education, career and lifestyle.
