We are recruiting for a Machinist/Mechanical Engineer/Specialist Mechanical Engineer/Workshop Manager who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The Bioengineering team provides a repair, maintenance and manufacture service to the cancer centre.  The department is split into 3 sections - the mechanical workshop, EBME and radiotherapy engineering.   All three teams work together to ensure that cancer patients are treated in a safe and timely manner.

The mechanical workshop provides a manufacturing service for the cancer centre producing customised equipment that can not readily be purchased.

Candidates must be flexible and keen to be involved in helping patients.  They will be innovative in finding solutions to the challenges that they are given within the resources of the NHS.

We will consider candidates with a range of experience from those who have recently completed apprenticeships to those with a number of years of experience.  The appropriate banding will be discussed with candidates at interview.

In addition, you will receive a High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,870 and a maximum payment of £6,137 per annum pro rata.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with the radiographers and physics staff to produce patient specific, custom shielding and other aids to ensure that that radiotherapy treatment can be performed in a reproducible and safe way.

Provide specialist mechanical workshop services to the cancer centre including 3D printing and machining in a range of materials (both metals and plastics).  You will use your skills to design manufacture and repair patient specific aids.  You will work with the physics staff to design and manufacture equipment to be used by them to test equipment.

You will work with the other engineering teams to ensure our equipment is ready for patient use.  This could involve the manufacture or repair of parts, testing, servicing, calibration and repair of equipment.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Highly developed engineering/manufacturing skills. This requires the post-holder to be able to work to high precision limits and tolerances
- High degree of hand eye co-ordination required to manually operate machine tools to the required limits and service/calibrate delicate medical instruments.
- Technically innovative with the proven ability to develop, design and manufacture complex items.

**Desirable**

- Motivation and management of staff

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Specialist knowledge of Mechanical Workshop practice and Process (eg Precision Fitting/Milling/Grinding/)
- Sound knowledge of Engineering materials (eg. selection of materials for correct properties and application)
- Sound understanding of electrical and electro mechanical fault finding techniques
- Understanding of the hazards posed by and precautions needed with workshop hazards . Fumes, dust/particulate waste . Swarf and metallic waste . Solvents, cleaning agents and Toxic Waste (COSSH) . Heat Treatments, Soldering and Welding (Elevated temperatures and hot processesss) . Lifting and handling of sensitive equipment . Moving machinery

**Desirable**

- Specialist knowledge of gas control and medical vacuum equipment
- Sheet Lead work

### Previous Experience

**Essential**

- Mechanical Workshop practice (eg precision fitting/Milling/Turning/Grinding)
- Specialist experience in a production or instrument repair workshop

**Desirable**

- 3D printer / laser CNC

### Qualifications / Training

**Essential**

- BTEC/C&G/Level 3 apprenticeship Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Specialist Manufacturer training on the maintenance and repair of range of clinical equipment used in the administration of medical gases.
