### Job overview

The Maternity Infant Feeding Team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton requires two band 3 specialist support workers on a 2-year 22.5 hours per week fixed term contract to work across all sites at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.

The successful candidate will be actively involved in promoting and supporting breastfeeding and ensuring the safe, appropriate use of formula milk preparations. The role is pivotal in supporting UHDB to continue to embed its UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Accreditation.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with families in the antenatal and postnatal period, supporting them to make informed decisions about infant feeding. This will include giving professional advice on breastfeeding and lactation to parents and staff to ensure consistent advice and information is given.

The post holders will also be expected to support the specialist midwives responsible for infant feeding in the maternity setting to develop initiatives towards embedding UNICEF UK BFI standards. Initiatives include health promotion advice, assisting with the preparation of teaching materials, resources and environments, facilitating infant feeding classes and undertaking audits. Safeguarding compliance with the International Code of the Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes will be compulsory

The post will require an ability to work flexibly, meeting competing demands, to be adaptable, and reliable. Clinical support of breastfeeding is fundamental to the role, therefore previous experience in advising pregnant women and supporting new mothers to breastfeed and maintain lactation is essential. The successful applicants must also be driven by a passion to provide women-centred personalised care with a commitment to maintaining the UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation

- Full driving license with vehicle (as some cross site working).

### Experience & Knowledge

**Essential**

- Demonstrable previous experience of working with breastfeeding mothers
- Demonstrate understanding of safeguarding issues
- To be able to demonstrate awareness of health and safety issues
- demonstrable knowledge and understanding of data protection confidentiality
- Evidence of continuing professional development

**Desirable**

- Formal maternity care experience in a hospital/birth centre
- Experience of using hospital patient record system
- Experience of working in an acute hospital setting

### Education Training and Qualifications

**Essential**

- Previous experience supporting breastfeeding women, with a breastfeeding qualification (for example, IBCLC, ABM, Breastfeeding Network or equivalent)
- GCSE Maths & English Grades A-C, Levels 4-9, Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Foundation Degree. Maternity Pathway
