### Job overview

This post is to support expanding needs in obstetrics and gynaecology. In addition to provision of service, the Specialist would have the opportunity and support to develop special interests in the speciality and participate in the ongoing Maternity Improvement Projects in the department.

### Main duties of the job

The Specialist will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust:

Provision of a service to Staffordshire, Derbyshire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.

Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.

Provision of an out-of-hours service with colleagues including on-call cover on the middle grade rota.

Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for Foundation Years, Specialty Registrars and medical students.

Provision of cover for colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training.

Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.

Participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements.

Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).

Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by the a trust approved appraiser

Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Consultants to keep up to date with evidence-based practice.

Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, & the “GMC Performance Procedures”.

Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.

## Person Specification

### Communication

**Essential**

- Experience of formal presentations
- Evidence of ability to work as part of a MDT, sharing administration duties.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full GMC registration with a license to practice at date of commencement

**Desirable**

- MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry by date of appointment
- ATSM in Advance Labour ward
- ATSM in High-Risk Pregnancy

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Minimum of 12 years medical experience since primary medical qualification
- Minimum of 6 years at SAS grade or equivalent in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or equivalent gained either part time or through Less Than Full Time Training)
- Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist Grade Generic Capabilities

**Desirable**

- Evidence of independent clinical practice

### Audit / Research Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of & commitment and ability to supervise clinical audit
- Ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice.
- Willingness to participate in research

### Education & Teaching Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
- Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees.
- Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills in order to create effective teaching and learning opportunities
- Promotes and participates in individual and team learning, supporting multidisciplinary learning

**Desirable**

- Specific teaching qualification
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
- Attended a recognised teaching training course

### Management & Administrative Experience

**Desirable**

- Attended a management/ leadership course
